Why middle age women cry over Prince My son just asked me why Prince makes me cry. I was watching Prince sing on the Musicology DVD tour and was reduced to tears. I said that to make a young woman cry ( I was one once so I remember), just about all you need is a pretty face and a slow song. He said you mean like Justin Bieber (who he is not a fan of )? I said yes like that (no offense to the young folks who are here who like him). To make a 50 plus women sob, takes soul and groove and words that fill you to the brim and then overflow. Prince stands alone in that category for me. My sweet 11yr old boy then sat and held me. I love my son for understanding and I miss Prince in my world. Sounds like a sweet kid Prince was the last great musician singer we had and he had qualities that we won't ever see again and that alone is enough to make you cry.

me too. i feel where you're coming from. prince music has been part of my life for such a long time i'm still tearing up now and then when it hits me... he's no longer here with us.
i think a lot of us are feeling this way, and i find comfort in knowing how many people loved prince. knowing that his work will live forever, in the history books and in our hearts

Yes your right, that alone is enough. Even at his young age, he can see the unique talent that was our Prince. "Give me back the time, you can keep the memories"

When I saw this thread post, I thought, Hmmmm. This oughtta be good! I'd like to know why I'm crying almost every day about this. But I think I know. Prince is someone I didn't know personally but I have an idea of who he was through his music and other things. I think he was a good person who took a lot of BS from people, dealt with all the criticism and misunderstanding of things he did, and still just kept being himself anyway - and helped people, to boot. I admire and respect him for that - and feel we're losing more and more of that type of person as our society gets more messed up. Don't get me wrong, it's God's workd and still a good world, but we need to make it better.
He didn't really bother anyone. I love that about him.
And then of course there was the beautiful voice and the amzaing singing and music too. [Edited 8/10/16 18:17pm]

I've stop listening to anyone but him and yes, that has changed too. It's not the same, not as joyful, more reflective than anything. Reflective about his life and my own. "Give me back the time, you can keep the memories"

Age has nothing at all to do with who your heart loves. I'm six years older than Princeand I've seen and loved and lost a lot of people both relatives and friends. For 33 years Prince's music has taken me to all types of emotions. The best times of my life where going to see him in concert. I thought I'd known pain and grief in my life, but nothing could have prepared mefor April 21,2016. Nothing.

Yes, I've lost family and friends too, I felt grief for them, but not like this. I don't tell anyone that because they don't get it. I don't really get it. My son is the only one who knows I cry. I wonder when the tears will stop. I'm a single mom and I dont want him to keep seeing me like this. "Give me back the time, you can keep the memories"

Hi Nodin,
It's not just middle aged women, but jaded and world-weary near middle-aged men as well. For me, it was watching his performance of “All The Critics Love U In Montreux” from 2009 a few weeks after his death. The whole performance is euphoric, but the moment that really got to me takes place around the 4:15 mark, when the camera briefly cuts away to a young girl sitting on somebody's shoulders. It was just the look of sheer joy and exhilaration on her face - it brought home to me exactly what we'd lost. It's also quite wonderful when the crowd bursts into the “Forever In My Life” chant, apparently unprompted and in perfect time. I believe that there are many great artists in the world capable of moving us with their music, but who else can do precisely what Prince did at his best?

I put my Musicology CD on last week while running errands in town. About an hour before, I thought well I am still sad but not crying anymore. Then comes on Call my Name. So this 50+ lady was crying once again. I think I have to wait a while before I listen to that song again. Nothing compares 2 U

I always considered Prince my "first love" in a way. Even though it was a one sided crush...he became the first man I had sexual/romantic feelings for during puberty...I had his posters in my bedroom, I loved his music, videos, that kinda stays with a girl doesn't it? If anyone had ever seen the movie Empire Records...that Liv Tyler character was so me in how she loved/romantized the rock star in the movie....it reminded me about how I felt with Prince.
Prince will always be my first .....

i used to belong to an elvis forum and there was this really bright guy who had a theory of why elvis was so popular on his own while the beatles had to be part of a group. He said Elvis had all familial qualities wrapped up in one, brother, mother, father while the beatles had four seperate personalites, paul and john being the mother and father while george and ringo were the children. So, the idea is, that there is something to appeal to pretty much anyone, older women might want to be a mother, younger woman a lover, kids a smaller brother or child figure. I think it's true. I've read stories fairly recently that when elvis died, people were doing the same things, women crying and hugging each other. Muhammad Ali was another figure who was a mix of masculine and feminine qualities and many people have cried over either just meeting him or his condition because they loved him so much.I think Prince fulfills a lot of those same things.

I've been thinking about this a lot - because man, this shit is hard - and I think it's a whole bunch of things, many of which have been mentioned, but with P, it's all of them at once...
- The world is getting more and more commercialized and trashy, and P represented the importance of realy, authentic music, and the type of community that could create, as opposed to it being all about brands and image and bullshit...
- Almost no-one could channel energy/love the way he did, he could just open himself and out it came, and that is incredibly rare and precious, and I can't think of anyone else who can do it...and its just such a phenomenal loss...
- It's a dark year in general, and everything seems to be getting way darker and he knew that, and saw it coming, and told us we all needed to stick together, and now he's not effing here...and we need him...
- I think for a lot of us middle aged women, he was really tied up with our sexual awakenings, and losing him has taken us back to that, and what he represented for us then, and y'know, to think about the difference between how we felt when we were 14 or whatever, and the real life and real men that came after that...which was not always quite so sexy...
- There was the human bit of P (which as we know, was as human as everyone), and then there's the artist, and what he could do, and the fact that there is something just so otherworldly and transcendent about it...and it feels like that can't and shouldn't and won't die, and at the same time, he's dead and it makes no sense at all...
- The way he died was awful and shocking and tragic and confounding and so so wrong for someone who lived the kind of life he lived, and it's not okay, and it's just really really hard to come to terms with...
- And it also I think, really stimulates the protective part of us, because we realize now there was something really not okay with him, and we want to be able to do something about it and help him or get someone to help him, and we can't and we never will and it's too late and that just totally sucks...
So yeah, lots of stuff... Not like I love my guitar....
