GB's Shake always reminded me of the Question mark & The Mysterians' 96 Tears. Has anyone else noticed?

they're very similair, but they're just simple, basic rock piano riff/chord progression.

a bit like the Portishead glory box chord progression (that's an Isaac hayes sample i believe) - that progression is in a million and one other songs.

Yeah that's taken from Ike's Rap II. "I'm so tiiired..." Love that song.
In Shake though it is not a straightforward sample but more like a noticeable similarity.
Whether that was done deliberately of not I'm not sure but 96 Tears instantly pops up into my head whenever I hear Shake.

I only know of the original version (see link in OP) and was not aware that Aretha Franklin had covered it until now .

Ahh, see I didn't even know hers was a cover! I tend not to look at liner notes most of the time

The original has always been very popular in France and so is the Stranglers version, so I heard it quite a lot on the radio.

Aretha's version came only 2 years after the original but it sounds very different, like it's not the same song. And it hasn't got that distinct keyboard riff I was referring to.

The first time I listened to Graffiti Bridge and heard the keyboard on Shake, my first thought was that it was a new cover of 96 Tears lol.
