You should have a lack of respect to the Prince man who failed to keep some of his works in print.

People of your geneartion on average will not have as much to spend as older generations so do not think that is a personal issue.

Blame your politicians and banksters.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Anna = I am surprised you so young! You've made some interesting posts and seem to know what you are talking about. There has ben some tension among new and long term orgers and I think the occasional nasty comment that has been made may often be directed to older people who came back to Prince after drifting or people who just were PR fans in the day. Although I'm not an longtermer, I am one oldster (58) who is delighted that younger fans are embracing Prince. His legacy would be minimal if the joy of his music isn't handed down across generations. Your post that your toddler loving Prince (already beyond the singles with Housequake lol ) just demonstrates this so well. I hope all these posts are showing you that all of the relative younguns' are more than welcome here! I also hope that one day you will have a grandchild jamming to Funkn'Roll biggrin .

you're probably right. there is always snobbery and weirdness in fandom. i got the same sort of thing in bowie fandom. i decided years ago i was going to stop apologizing for "let's dance " being my first bowie record. can i help it that i was born AFTER he retired Ziggy and the spiders?! does it mean i love and admire bowie any less?! of course not! i'm sure it's the same for you prince newbies. i hate that you guys didn't get to experience the PR world of 84'(every early fan's vindication, imo) but all of it's good, so dig in and enjoy. wink

So orgnote them some places they can go instead of proving their point about the snobbery. Go ahead, I dare you.

Apologies if my being direct came off as snobbery, but I'm not upset at other people that got to listen to Hendrix when he was originally released, or see Elvis in concert. Prince left us with so much music, and so much more to come, I don't see the purpose in complaining from anyone. Rookie or completist. What the OP doesn't realize is that even though I got to live during Prince's career, seeing him many times live etc...,I would give anything to be able to hear 1999, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT for the first time again. So in a way having so much to discover still is a blessing. But like all us OL' schoolers. You gotta be willing to do the work. [Edited 8/5/16 20:17pm]

I don't think she's upset at anyone getting to see any of the original stuff, she's upset at the attitude that you MUST KNOW all this stuff in order to be a 'true fan'. I mean, come on now, not everyone has the resources or the time to dig for everything.

Try to consider that people's station in life isn't like yours, and be kind enough to actually point people to stuff, rather than just dismissively make flippant statements, whether you mean them to be flippant or not -- it certainly read that way to me. I mean, you believe she has a lot to discover? Try listing a few things for her that she might want to go check out and look for. I know I've found out some things I didn't know about until I started reading here, and I've loved Prince's music and career for YEARS. I also didn't have steady internet until 2 years ago, because I couldn't afford it. Go figure, eh.

I've noticed that being a younger fan I've always felt like there was a lot of snobbery in the Prince community, especially from completists. I was born like 6 months before Diamonds and Pearls was released. Of course I haven't heard every single solitary thing the man put out and I can't own every piece of material because some things are out of print (and therefore out of my price bracket lol ) I feel like there is a lack of respect where there could be education and embrace. Also annoyed at the people that act like being poor and a Prince fan makes you less of a fan because you can't own all this rare, expensive shit. sorry for the rant, I've just come across some nasty attitudes and comments on here and on Prince fan pages and I'm thinking like, I'm 25. I couldn't get into Glam Slam at 1 years old and I think the first Prince CD I remember clear as Day is Emancipation. It's nearly impossible to know every piece of knowledge about the man as somebody twice my age, but that doesn't mean I love him any less.

I welcome you with Purple Hugs and look forward to your journey as you travel through the Purple Catalogue - I am a long term Prince fan (but not as long as some others here) but I want you to feel welcome and hope you can find the whole catalogue in the journey. xx

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I appreciate any age group of fans as long as they love and appreciate Prince's music. The age of a person and the duration and experience with Prince's music does not make a person a valid Prince fan. The sheer fact you are intrigued about Prince whether it started before he passed or because he passed I feel does not matter. I have been a Prince fan since 1982 far too young to get what he was fully about, I just knew I liked what I saw and heard. And I have been hooked since. I just never was the type to post my thoughts and opinions online on a medium such as the Org, but after we lost Prince, I lost it so to speak.

+++

I am sorry your feeling weird vibes here on the Org. I think some peeps are just trippin' due to the loss of Prince and some are just really territorial/possessive. I feel there are too many awesome, knowledgeable people on the Org to let the bad apples push you away or make you feel bad.

+++

Prince's legacy will live on and on and on if all of us, new and old school listeners band together and spread his music, love and message.

Just take your time. I'm 26 and have been a fan since 2003. Prince is the sort of thing you spend your whole life on, when you include all the bootlegs you couldn't hear everything if you tried. There's a lot of bitter Comic Book Guys on here but it's all part of the fun.

It happens in every fan bases honestly. But yeah I did feel like Prince fans were a bit snob but that's because I thought Prince was like this too confused . I was WRONG about him and his fans too. Just ignore the ones who think they are better because they are not. I lurk more than I post and I think there are great people here.
What is important is the music, that's why you came here. I think any artists would want their older fans to welcome the newer ones. I mean, how amazing is for an artist to have new people discover their art? That's how he is going to live on.

I agree with you as well, but its not just the younger fans, I think Non Americans and those who do not own every single fart recorded by Prince get the short end of the stick too.

.

As I only have the CD's available in New Zealand and a few records and books, and I also have a cheap turntable rather than a chromium steel thing that costs $5k or more. Also because I live in a flatette that does not have separate rooms for a Prince collection (It sits mostly on one shelf) I am on the outer here too.

.

Also I am on the outer because I am not Black or evangelistic Christian like most of the Prince elite think they are besides the rich white middle aged American contingent that dominates the org along with the Churchified blacks.

.

In reality, nearly everyone here is an outcast of some kind, but I agree, some of the old lags need to be more tolerant when newer fans and less affluent/hardcore make errors or say something not to their liking. I get it all the time, some pernickety stuck up twat telling me something siw rong or answer the question and I think some of the mods are quite unkind too.

.

There needs to be more love and socialist cohesion on this site. Too many newbies and less affluent fans get discouraged and this site will have a fan base as dated as its 1990s graphics that sorely need updating.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I understand that as a Prince fan you want to listen to everything that's out there, I've been a fan since 1988 and I don't own everything there is but I do have a lot of rarities, if you aren't bothered for owning the originals right now then I'd be happy to copy some music for you and send it over. Also if you search on the internet there is plenty of rare music available for free.

I am 31, I've been listening to Prince since I was about 11. I even wrote an essay on him in Jr. High. I learn new things about him all the time. I pull out CD's that I've owned for years and find new songs that I haven't heard before, or that I've heard but didn't listen to them as closely when I was younger as I do now. I don't own any expensive shit in reference to Prince. But I don't think I am less of a fan because I don't. Because for me it's all about the music, not about owning expensive memorialbelia, although some day I hope to and plan on owning some.

Ignore the elitists and snobs innit! Lot's of old people - which I'm probably one of! I missed the whole NPGMC and early internet stuff that he did, because at that time you had to have a certain bit of money to get the internet - and as I was at uni and studying there was no way even the times I could hit up an internet cafe or the like I could afford to subscribe. Didn't have a credit card even.

.

I think that sparsity, made me a different kind of fan - so the scraps and bits I could get or afford I really valued and played the fuck out of.

.

I envy you the fact you have lots to still discover and many years to keep listening. I'm sure you've got your hands on as much as you can or can afford! Happy listening and discovering!

Amazing that Prince was in the game so long that this generational tug and pull is real

He was around for so long that there is so much to choose from to love and cherish for both young and old and that is why he is an icon and somewhere in the world right now there is a baby being born who will love Prince and become part of the "family". That is a baby who did not know a living Prince but only via the art, interviews, videos, music, etc.

This is why Prince is a Legend. He a true Icon and now is as Marilyn, James Dean, Elvis.

AsI posted earlier, I agree with the sentient of this thread. I also got you until the above, which sounds like the same old stereotyping that is not helpful to make your point. After all, it was the stereotyping of younger/newer orgers that this thread is about.

In reality, nearly everyone here is an outcast of some kind, but I agree, some of the old lags need to be more tolerant when newer fans and less affluent/hardcore make errors or say something not to their liking. I'm 70 and I'm new here too. In most internet communities (not just this one), newbies can have a tough time integrating and catching up. If you love the music, you can joyously spend years exploring and learning, then applying that learning to your own life. Hopefully it will you lead you to playing music as well. You'll meet some snobs but you'll meet a few who are friendly and generous with their knowledge, support and time. Follow them and completely ignore any nastiness. smile

To all the newbies. Ignore the snobs and elitists. Every fan has a history with Prince - rich, poor, black, white, young, old - whatever. Create your OWN history with the artist and his music - just as I did 30+ years ago. Enjoy the ride!

My attitude is that love is love, y'know? Whether it's a long term fan from the start, or a newbie who is just beginning to discover and delve into the delights of Prince's back catalogue. In my opinion there *is* a lot of snobbery, but that sort of attitude and behaviour is not confined to the fans of Prince by any means.

I've read posts where some are worried about the future of the .Org, but surely the best way to keep the discussions going is to encourage the newbies to join in! And that isn't exactly going to happen by people showing attitude.

I can see exactly where the OP is coming from. D&P album was released the day I was born so were roughly the same age. T
But snobbery isn't a thing unique to Prince fans. Of all fan communities you get this. I just ignore it. There are many people that are willing to inform us younger ones all about Prince and his music releases.

Because he hit such a nerve with many, (regardless of however and whenever fans were drawn to him), its personal and somehow, others are perceived as threatening to their own intimacy with his persona and work.

Yes, some folks act out on that in a delusionally territorial manner.

Definitely not limited to age, knowledge, hoarding collections, access, financial status or anything else. Very much a Prince fan thing.

Haven't seen a thorough study of the degree of this phenomenon from a proper academic and clinical perspective though. Is there any?

I definitely feel you on that. I mean jeez the man has 30 something RELEASED albums, countless bootlegs floating around, rare Internet releases that were released on Windows 95 and shit. I mean goodness, even older fans dont have time for that. Not only that certain snobbish fans don't put in consideration that younger or less financially able fans simply don't know or can afford certain things exist. That is the time when there alleged superiority can actually do something productive and educate those who don't know.
