I love Jeff Beck and I love Purple Rain but all these covers just point out how nobody could do it like Prince do. It's just not the same. sad But I know it's the thought that counts, so thanks Jeff! smile

I didn't make it past the first half of the first verse. I will always hold that "Purple Rain" should simply not be covered - ever. These guys are talented on their own, but damn it - pick another song to pay tribute with. It's so cliché to me to pick that one anyway. I sorta dug that the Dixie Chicks chose "Nothing Compares 2 U" as theirs, and Carlos Santana chose a random one no one expected.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Agreed, there is an extra thing to this song that can't be picked up by sheer Rock musicians so they should leaf it. I think that the choice Santana made wasn't that random, the song is definitely inspired by the work of Santana.

I'm going to see Jeff Beck next week but I hope he doesn't play Purple Rain. razz I agree that Santana was smart to do a tribute song that was unexpected and not over done.

I didn't like the Dixie Chicks cover because they used Sinead O'Connor's lyrics, not Prince's. I didn't like Springsteen's cover of Purple Rain either, I'm guessing most people likes it just because it was Springsteen and he was paying respect to Prince. But the cover itself was just average.

I'm not really a Bruce fan, but his cover was the one I enjoyed. At this point with all the horrid covers, "average" sounds pretty decent. I liked the way they approached it, and the level of respect throughout.

I think Jeff Beck is a great guitar player, and deserves the accolades he gets and has historically. However, watching this just makes me even more sad. It just reminds me - again - how great Prince actually was and how we spoiled we'd become. Prince's state prescence was out of this world. He sang that anthem, wrote it, played the incredible guitar solo....all one man! I felt the same when I watched Bilal's amazing performance of The Beautiful Ones...i was thrilled with Bilal sang it and how much he put into it...but it reminded me - again - that one man sang that song, wrote it, and did that guitar solo that Kirk (Roots guitarist) was doing in the background....amazing.

It is amazing how big a loss this is and how bad it still feels after nearly 4 months.

To me there's something... patronizing? disingenuous? about the Purple Rain covers. As though either a: the artist thinks it's the only Prince song their fans will know, or b: it is the only Prince song the artist knows. And while I agree Prince owns Purple Rain, it is, relatively, an easy song to cover (not to nail, vocally or solo-wise). And I don't think the deluge of covers are doing Prince's legacy any favours at this point. A week after his passing? Sure. Now it justs looks like bandwagon jumping, and I'm betting all the young people who don't know Prince are sick of the tributes to the Purple Rain guy, the way I'd roll my eyes when I saw people selling Princess Diana merch after she died. Pick another song. Don't make a big deal out of it, just say, "this is a Prince song."

Agreed. All these Purple Rain covers are starting to turn into a parody. It just goes to show how little imagination is actually going into these tributes. Sing something else for God's sake.

Yes yes yes. You'd think Prince was a one hit wonder with everybody covering the same song. Little Red Corvette was really the song that put Prince on the map. Has anyone done that in any of these tributes? That's just one example. Of course there are so many other worthy contenders.

I do agree about Purple Rain being overdone. Much to my surprise, I thought Adam Levine's was the best version done to date.

My thoughts exactly...cover something other than "Purple Rain." I wonder if one of the reasons that so many people are covering "Purple Rain" is because vocally, it's a pretty easy song to cover.

No it's not! Because it's vocally...that it's being butchered all to fucking hell. Leave it alone, people! Just stop it! falloff

I should have said it's an easier song to cover by Prince standards. In my opinion, based on just singing along to Prince, PR is easier to sing than hits like Let's Go Crazy, LRC, and 1999.

I think you're both right. It's quite a simple melody, which means other people *can* sing it....but it's a really simple melody, and so it shouldn't be overdone, which many people do (stop it with all the trills people)...and so, you need to have a really beautiful and complex voice just in its pure quality to sing such a simple melody and make it sound incredible, and a voice which carries an enormous amount of emotion without sounding like it's overwrought...ergo, only Prince should sing it...and that's before we've even got to the matter of the guitar.

I agree with most of the comments, I haven't been fond of most of the covers so far. However, the one thing I can say is that just the fact that so many musicians have felt the need to pay their personal tribute to Prince has been quite a symbol of respect. Obviously, I feel it's well deserved and it's also nice to see as a fan.
