Yay! Loved this album. Sometimes I wish for my own selfish reasons, since I think the public didn't really get ATWIAD, that he would have kept the craze and style going a little longer by following up with Purple Rain 2 and then doing ATWIAD later down the road. I personally loved that he was bold enough to go the artistic novelty route of ATWIAD and it was well received by nonconformist music lovers like us, but I feel like majority of the public didn't understand it and was so predisposed to another PR that when they didn't get it, they were disappointed. Sometimes I wonder, what if... [Edited 8/6/16 5:21am]

I think it's a good album, but nowhere near a masterpiece. I personally would have liked to see another Purple Rainish styled album...maybe with Electric Intercourse in the tracklist?

Huge NAY.
I like 3 songs on the album plus She's Always In my Hair. Much rather had the Roadhouse album.

YAY! It's just too damn small of an album. Temptation is a huge, long clunka, he should have kept it in his sacred vault. It would have been a wonderful find later for the insatiable ones. He should have added the bsides, she's always in my hair, hello, girl, and the polished version of the P. R. outtake, electric intercourse. I know he must have been incredibly busy at the time with pressure from Warner brothers to make the most of his most recent success but, With more time... Ah, who knows. This album worked for me anyway. I remember, as a kid, being totally bowled over by the tracks 1. 2. 3. 4. &. 7. I even like the frantic madness of tambourine. I intuitively caught on that he was verging off from the obvious path and this established an enduring obsession in me for this unique enigmatic artist. small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

I love ATWIAD 100%
But I do wonder what if 'Roadhouse Garden' came out in 1985:Dance Electric, Splash, Our Destiny, Roadhouse Garden etc
I also wonder if because of the grand scale of the Purple Reign, if Prince would have been able to release a 2 disc set or 2 seperate disc Roadhouse Garden(a welcome 2 the ride for the new watchers) & Around the World in a Day(a thank you letter to the fans)
I seriously wonder, what kind of success ATWIAD could have had it there was a focused promo of the album. I strongly believe it needed the push, not because it wasn't good but because it was such a drastic change in direction. No less than 5 single(with long versions and B sides) videos for all. The last video should have been in Black n White to get us ready 4 Parade.

I agree, Electric Intercourse should have been on here. I can't believe that song is not on any album and it would have fitted right in here. Prince wanted it released with no promotion, maybe he felt after PR it was overkill. About the cover he said he thought people were sick of seeing him so he didn't put himself on it. . Baby, you're a star.

I think these are separate questions. Logistically Prince could have bled purple rain for another 12 months. The revolution wanted him to tour Europe and in those days that was proper promotion. He could have added millions of sales. In retrospect the reason why the world lit up purple on his death was due to such bolshie audacity. He was very much a fuck you man and u love him for it.

In retrospect the reason why the world lit up purple on his death was due to such bolshie audacity. He was very much a fuck you man and u love him for it. He did make some questionable tour decisions. He could have toured Europe with Purple Rain and I don't understand why he didn't. Maybe he also should have toured SOTT In the States but he didn't as he felt his records were not selling well at the time. However, the tour may have pushed sales up as many people buy concert tickets even if they dont buy the current album. This happened in his career numerous times, people would buy a ticket for a show but not necessarily buy the album or they would buy it after seeing a song performed live. SOTT was hurt because of the price. The average cassette was around $7.99 in 1987. SOTT cassette was $16.99 + tax. The average buying public didn't buy it.

Alan Light's book gives some reason why he quit the purple rain tour, one was that he was tired of the whole project as were the band. they'd been rehearsing that set for hours a day way before they went on tour but i think the biggest reason was, he was exhausted, stressed and really didn't like that level of superstardom. Prince said the moment he decided he'd had it was when he was backstage ready to go on and a techie hit him with his guitar and cut him. After that, we all heard the "i'm going to look for the ladder" and that he was retired from live performing for good. He probably meant it at the time, like Ali after his tougher fights, he'd retire on the spot and once he'd gotten some rest he'd be talking about his next fight.

YAY YAY YAY!!!!!!!
i knew the songs controversy/LRC/1999 but as a 14 yr old PR was when i realised that this man was actually named Prince and he was amazing!!!
ive been listening to ATWIAD on a regular basis more than ever lately- i get goosebumps when i hear the ladder, PP and COTH. the first 2 i heard live in feb (along with RB) and the latter i woke up with in my head the first morning after the news hit (complete with hot tears).
love this album
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

Yay! One of the best things about Prince was that he didn't stagnate and kept his fans on their toes and even though that goes for his other work throughout the years, it stands out here especially because it would have been so tempting I imagine to please and appease the masses with something more predictable, more PR like. Plus a few of my favorites are on this album and only two songs I would say I don't really care for. We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. . .

ya, in that era, he was probably the only one. Bruce Springsteen wasn't very experimental in the 80's, Michael and Madonna only wanted sales, although Madonna at least made efforts to try new sounds and looks. George Michael wasn't too interested in making radical changes. Prince was alone, and again, it's been said many times, he would have fit in better in the 60's.

thedance said: why in heavens name would it be a "nay"????? Yeah, I think it's going to be difficult to find a "nay". Nine out of ten Prince fans love this album and would put it in their top 5. Which is why I'm not gonnna tell everybody how great it is, I'd be preaching to the converted.

LondonIrish1970 said: Big YAY from me. I think what are the weaker tracks are at the end of the album so it can be viewed to run out of steam but the album overall and the really fantastic b-sides added together make this one near the top of the pile for me. It's not running out of steam at all; quite the opposite! It builds to a climax. The Ladder and Temptation make this album what it is. They finish the story that Prince is telling on this album.

Kate Bush was another one who followed her own quirky muse as opposed to going for the big $$££. She probably could have made it big in the US if she had toured there, but she preferred to stay home in England and kept recording excellent, unique albums at an ever slower pace, to the point where Prince recorded ten albums and did 5 world tours in the time it took for Kate to finish one album. And she didn't perform live until 2014. (But when she did, it was awesome!) But when it came to sheer talent and vision and individualty, Kate was the only one who could rival Prince in the 1980s.

BillieBalloon said: I love this album, for me it's Prince at one of his creative peaks. However, do you think it was a mistake to release an introspective record after the success of Purple Rain? Perhaps he could have monopolised on the success of PR and not gone down the personal route so soon. I'm glad he did release it but I think it hurt his record sales for quite a while. Just some thoughts on the album. [Edited 8/5/16 13:54pm] A VERY big Y A Y from me. One of hist best and no weak moments on that album. 'Liberate My Mind'

Exactly! I would even include Pop Life as the start of the end in how it references that something is missing. BTW, agreed with your Kate Bush comment too. Your lucky if you got to see her in 2014.

He could do the promo for some Prince super deluxe reissues. I like the idea of a three disc ATWIAD / Roadhouse Garden / DVD videos and Concert Then Parade/ Dream Factory/ DVD Videos and Concert. Imagine that for every album from 1980 to 88 for a start. One can dream Who do i send my ideas too?

Big YAY. One of my top five Prince´s albums. I loved Tamborine from the first moment I heard it, followed closely by Temptation and the tittle track. Loved the art cover and the exotic atmosphere of the album.
