Why do people hate Cause and Effect?

I was going back through some old threads here and the hate for Cause and Effect was major. eek I don't understand why. I totally dig the song, especially live versions. Great groove. I love the version he did at Montreux in 2013, especially the ending. I'm not saying it's the best Prince song ever but certainly doesn't deserve the harsh criticism it got here, IMO. smile

i think i like it more now than i did back then. not sure what i thought about it first time round.

but the recent live versions with 3rd Eye Girl were great. i wish he'd stuck a reworked version
of it on Plectrum Electrum, instead of some of the hannah vocal tracks smile

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Thanks to this thread, I listened to it again and it really is just another Prince song about being all that you can be and being yourself and all that. It had some nice lines about how you need 2 grow up or be a superstar, but you can't be both... Hmmmm... Interesting, but nothing special...

I use it as track 1 on 20Ten before "Compassion", and I also insert "Hot Summer" before "Laydown". It makes for a better album, IMO.

It was a shit few years wasn't it? Like basically 1995 onwards. If somehow I could travel back to 1995 and leave a little note saying: "This Dolly Parton track you've heard before, I'm down with that later."

Pffffff Everybody Knows like Leonhard Coehn the deep medi bass of 1980s dirt does not compare to the sterile inoffensive wish digital non clip of gay Rottweiler ProTools 21st century Prince.

It grew on me quite a bit, even if I could barely tolerate it at first.

However, the audience sounds ("NPS style") used on it just make it sound fake. The drums could have more punch to them too.

I think "Compassion" is a better song with a similar vibe from that period.

Yeah, some people here think they know what makes a great album better than the man who actually made the album.

whenever I hear a song like this. I think what if Dirty Mind Prince or 1999 Prince or Parade Prince did this song... what would the music sound like? how would the lyrics/chorus be presented differently?

I like the message, the lil insight in what he is feeling/thinking, but the song is sappy

It has potential...But, to me, it sounds like he's trying to squash in too many different genres...It's just a bit 'muddled' and sounds unfinished.

i make plenty of playlists don't worry... however i don't mess with the art PRINCE created and add and replace songs to his ALBUMS.

The Montreux 2013 version made me see this in a different light. It was amazing and so happy to have been there.

I'd much rather listen to some of the stuff he played with 3rdeye than say, Cream, a song I never understood why he liked so much.

There are two threads here (I guess the first one got so big they had to create a part 2 lol ) about this song and not too much love for it.

Maybe I'm just not a kiss ass. Oh right - I'm not a fam either. (Worst. Term. Ever. BTW)

The fact is those songs fit quite well into 20Ten's sound, and "Cause and Effect" is a better opening track. "Hot Summer" is just a fun, bouncy song (although we've heard it before in "Shake", and "Guitar").

Besides, every single person here has created their own expanded album playlist, adding the b-sides (which Prince deemed not quite suitable for the album's intent), and outtakes (see b-sides explanation), to create an album that even better represented that era. SOTT, Purple Rain, Parade, Lovesexy - all of these have had their own fan-made-expanded-special-edition-deluxe-super-anniversary-essential-perfect-playlist versions.

So don't even come for me, boo. But you enjoy your "Prince rock songs" or "Prince love songs" playlists on your iPhone.
