- Created another version of it (18 & Over) and rerecorded it for Madhouse.
- Did several remixes of if (for an abandoned single)
- Included it on a number of configurations between 1993 and 1994, including 2 planned EPs.

Prince has never really shown this much persistence with a single track, so what is it about the song exactly?

I think it's just very rich aurally. (Pun intended.)

Great song. My favourite version is probably the one on 10,000 Wallpaper that segues into Endorphinmachine.

I think you're referring to "Space", not "Come".

Anyway you're right in sayin' P was particularly interested in the development of this tune.
Probably he was seein' it as some kind of "key track" in his artistic evolution.

My favourite version is undoubtly the album version. Just Epic.

But I like also the other versions, apart from "The Beautiful Experience" remix that I find somewhat less interesting and enjoyable.

I have 5 versions... A couple sound like they could have been taken from live performances, in one there is some audible noise from the audience.

I think it says something that when he performed the song live it was rarely, if ever the Album version. It tended to be the swirling hypnotic beat, bass & occasional horn riff.

I think back in 93/94 the original would have definitely had legs as a single. Especially in countries where songs like SexyMF had done well. It would have almost certainly been a huge hit in the clubs specially had there been a Max-single with all the remixes etc.

Space has various versions, Album, Acoustic, Universal Love, Funky Stuff, Madhouse

TMBGITW has multiple versions too.

Or maybe it was the exact opposite and he was struggling with it. Sometimes that happens. You have a good idea and you just don't know how to work it out. But yes, he must have thought the track was important enough to keep trying. My favourite version is the early one, which he played live in 1993. It's got a haunting, hypnotic vibe that's missing from the album version.

When he played the song live, he usually played the original version. Suggesting he had a preference. I can't ever recall hearing the album version live.

Also there is no question the early versions would have been dancefloor fillers. The Album version was stripped of any radio potential and turned into an extended overly explicit R'n'B song. Like he'd deconstructed the song and rebuilt it to be interesting enough fans would like it, but also ensuring WB couldn't do anything with it.

sounds like it was going to be a foray into something bigger , obviously we got two seperate albums. The album version is the best. The others are pale in comparison.

I love both polished versions of "Come" the techno retro club mix and the album "macho" mix (those horns!)... and I appreciate the more natural muscle funk version that was first mixed up.

I think Prince hit on a song idea that sounded fresh to his growing grab bag, so he really played around with it.

Honesly - it's my favorite track of his most of the time - the long album opening version. I don't mind the initial version but I heard the epic first and I loved all the things about it that were not done with the previous version. I just can't have it any other way now.

The most badass album opener he EVER did - I can't believe he didn't show love for this album in general. Anyone with ears can hear that it is some of the best work he ever did - especially when compared to his other 90s work.

I like The Gold Experience too - a lot - but Come is just so close to my heart. Total genius - performace wise (vocals, bass, horns especially), songwriting and arrangements.

Top pantheon of Prince songs IMO.

I always felt the album version was the weakest of the bunch.
