Yes, I believe he became more open. He started writing his biography and talked about his family and experiences on stage. IMHO he was looking towards the future and being a mentor. He was starting to focus on his legacy. I believe he will continue to inspire many generations to come.

The most open that Prince ever was to fans was in the early 2000's

Paisley Park - 'Celebrations' which i thankfully attended.

^^^^This. Once you feel more comfortable with who you are and where you're going and what your purpose is, you start thinking more and more about how to fulfill it. That included being more vulnerable. That vulnerability showed in his recent music. He was becoming more beautiful than ever.

It's strange to me and sad that his legacy had to be shown the way it has been. But that was gods plan and we should never refute it or want it to be different. Prince is happy where he is I think, and we'll be there with him too someday.

sounds like it to me. I used to hear horrid stories about him, how he would scream at fans and rip up stuff they gave him, and then the stories of his paranoia and bodyguards. 84 was a long time ago so I really don't think the girls who were teenagers at the time are going to scream and rip at him like they used to and the young girls are repeating that process with other stars. So, I guess he really didn't need to be as on guard, i've heard so many stories of him just talking with fans and walking around like a normal person in recent years. He just seemed to really mellow and change, like most of us i guess. just watch him with jay leno, he seems like a normal guy with childlike tendencies, just a loveable guy. Maybe it was safe for him to be like that at that point in his life.

Yes...but he gave us hell along the way. I think he had a love/hate relationship with us.

Ive never seen an artist sue their fans until Prince did it...that to me was a lil too much. I mean dont bite the hand that feeds you. I know bootleggers and such take things to far and they were and still are wrong for that, but to sue a fan was just wrong.

This gave me a chuckle. Yeah, we were all kinda wild in our younger days and I agree that everyone grew up a lot.
And yes, he still had a few little boy tendencies. smile
But man oh man, could he handle himself maturely too when he had to. Especially on stage. All man there.

we gave it back pretty thick too though, i still remember when he tried to get the org to stop putting up his pics, most of us were like "wtf, what an asshole" then a poster pointed out a recent thread, which i admit i posted on, where we "post your unflattering pics of prince" and boy we let him have it, the one pic i talked shit about was one where he bared all his teeth, one guy said he looked like a horse, I said he looked like a tard, we were fucked up.

I think early in his career alot of his reactions to fans stemmed from fear.

Once he realized that fans can be insane/stalkers, true, but the majority are normal folks who enjoy his music and once he understood fandom cultural custom like sharing pictures that were intended to amuse us and flatter him...fans can be very usefu. They can rally their voices to protect their celebrity. But it's better to move out of the way and allow the fans to selfgovern organically.

When he realized fandom is ABOUT him, but not FOR him...and that if he didn't interfere, fans would enjoy themselves in harmless fun, and happy fans are supportive fans and can be a very valuable asset.

Lol I remember that! Also I remember someone posting a lovesexy era pic and photo shopping it to make it appear that prince was completely bald

I think so, especially when he came back to Minnesota. He was hosting lots of events for fans at Paisley Park. But no I don't think he ever softened up about the Internet. lol

I think even in his heyday he was comparatively nice and friendly to his fans, occasionally answering fanmail or playing unexpected concerts (like the one for the deaf kids). And remember that in the early 90s he participated with Controversy fanzine and they organized the convention.

Many of his fans did stalkerish things, like breaking into his kitchen or stealing stuff from Paisley Park during the celebrations, or screaming like banshees when it´s totally inappropriate, so I understand why he would keep a good distance to his fans.

And a closer look at all the police files of people trying to report Prince to the police for the most incredible and outrageous things also helps me understand why he often isolated himself from strangers. Some of those people are just insane.

That being said, I think he was really mellow and open during the 2002 celebration that I attended, and I still remember how grateful he was and how he thanked us for sticking with him through the thick and the thin, and it felt like it really came from the bottom of his heart.

Those days during the celebration are memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Didn´t feel like a superstar at all, more like a family member or friend who invited us to his house.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I see why you posted that link. lol
I doubt Prince really intended to sue, to me it seemed more like a warning or something along those lines. However I can understand the hurt feelings from fans. I really don't know enough about what happened during that time I'll have to dig up some old threads.
