Tavis Smiley discussing Prince

Tavis talks about Prince's painkiller addiction here and the time he spent with him and long conversations. A lot of good content.

He also talks about the economics of his PBS show and some other artists, but that's obviously not why I'm posting it here.

Thank u for posting this interview. U dont know how much it means to me to know that Prince was affected by MJ's death in a similar way to me as a fan of both of them. This means so much to my heart and soul. I just wish half of me had not died on June 25th 2009 (as well as all the trial torment in 2004/2005) so that I could have tried to heal faster and truely be a fan and enjoy life again while prince was here the last 7 years. I had no idea he would go too fast too. He always seemed healthier with no burn victem, back injuries, lupos, or vitiligo to deal with. I can't understand he had as much pain to deal with as much as MJ. But how am I to know when he is gone and we can't ask him now. I wish this world was not so hateful. The vendetta of Tom Sneddon apon MJ I can honestly say ruined my life as much as it did millions of fans around the world by what it did to MJ. And then in his murder complete and utter devastation. It makes me feel for some reason even more sad to know it affected Prince too but at the same time I feel so bad. I couldn't help either of my idols. HELPLESSNESS is IMMENSE~ GOD IT HURTS~ 4ever~ I am a complete and total failure. I dont' know why God Gives us these BEAUTIFUL ONES. We don't deserve them. I wonder lately if 1958 was the last that we will ever get these ANGELS. Did the Father Son and the Holy Ghost take the last train for the coast sometime after 1958?

I really like Tavis, he comes off as a down to earth, kind, smart guy. It seems like him and Prince were on similar, if not the same, wave lengths, and had a true love and respect for one another.
It was interesting getting some insight into Prince's response to Michael's death though. The media always liked to stirthepot with those two.

Thanks for sharing. Insightful interview. I'll check out his book on MJ. Hope he also writes a book about his friendship with Prince someday.

Thanks for posting this. Really interesting. And he's totally on point with his anger at some of the Prince stuff that has come out because P isn't here to defend himself. And he's another person who knew P that said P lived a clean drug free-life and these painkillers were obviously because he was in pain. Nothing angers me more than when the media or the comments section of media stories brand P as some loser junky like just some of the rock stars that did drugs for fun. Clearly that was NOT the case with P.

Prince loved MJ. Jimmy Jam even talked about years ago how him and Prince were in awe of The Jackson 5 and seeing this guy the same age as them on stage being famous.

Here is Prince talking about Michael around 2001:

I wondered if anyone noticed how irratated Tavis got and the look he gave Sway. I hate how so many people who knew even interacted with him on a daily basis are having their comments about his clean life style nggated because it does not tell the story the media wants to tell.

I hope once the estate is settled the family will be more forthcoming about what was going on with his health. Just to stop the media vultrues. Althought I have noticed that the sensationalism has died down and suspect it is because the tabloid media cannot find anything to scandalist to report.

There may be no "there" there (meaning nothing scandalous). Also of course it's a presidential election year and the Olympics are coming up so there's enough other stuff for the media to focus on. But there's a reason people like Tavis Smiley and Dez Dickerson made a point of saying the Prince they know wouldn't be associated with drugs. To me the message they're sending is P obviously had health issues and anything he was using was to try and take away the pain.

If you look back at P's life there never really was much scandal in it. Maybe changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, if you can call that a scandal, but that's about it. Nothing like what Michael Jackson went through. I think there's a certain level of respect for Prince that a typical celebrity wouldn't get so most of the media is choosing to let him rest in peace.

You are correct about letting him rest in peace. He never had public scandals attached to him that would just piss the public off. I think most sane would see is issues with the pain meds as a terrible tradegy.

I'm way late but thank you so much for posting this! I didn't even know Tavis had written a book about MJ. It was certainly interesting hearing about Prince's reaction to Michael's death. I've always wondered how he felt about it. When Prince was asked about MJ's passing in the 2014 Rolling Stone interview, he didn't say much other than "it's too close to me" or something like that, so it makes sense now.

Speaking of the year 1958 - Andy Gibb was also born in 1958. He passed in 1988.

I don't think that the media is voluntarily letting P rest in peace, it's simply

1) Prince isn't a mainstream celebrity at this point in time the way MJ was at his death

2) Prince was so successfully secretive that the press just doesn't have anything to write about.
