The Greatest Romance - No Hit Wonder~

I tried really hard to like this song when it was released, and it still makes me wonder... WHY? was this released as a potential hit single?

And Can Someone Answer The Question Of...

The Reason Why Adam Never Left Eve?

And What That Has To Do With Anything?

2 Deep 4 The Masses, If U Ask Me.

Maybe, but Prince has always added little bible/religious stories and phrases in his music - remember the lords prayer in "Controversy"?

For me, it's the music that stands out first and foremost, and if you're willing to go along for the ride, then check out the meaning behind these little phrases.

Clive Davis loved the song
and thought it would be a
potential hit single.

This is the most funky song on a very funk-less album. I can see why it failed to make an impression on the charts...

As much as I love the song I hate the crappy chorus that ruins it everytime I listen to it sad sad sad

This song goes down in the books as the single that prince finally fizzled out with..

I don't understand how this was supposed to be the hit that could bring his pop career out of the grave.

I couldnt and still cant actually warm to this song much.
I didnt think it was the song to put him back into mainstream.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

The song is so so.

The beat rocks though. Does it sample in any way or form Craig Mack's "Flava In Ya Ear"?

I mixed "Greatest" with "Flava" once on my CD mixer. It was basically the Prince song intercut with a Craig Mack rap, It made the song a little more interesting.

I also like how Prince uses the same loop at the end of "Anna Stesia" on "One Night Alone ..LIVE"

I never understood why this song was released as the first single. It's an okay song, but not the type of song that would get the masses excited (and this album was clearly designed to be a commercial comeback for Prince).A better first single would have been the obvious choice "So Far So Pleased".

But the "Adam and Eve" remix kicks ASS!!! smile

I thought the remix of this song with Eve was too funky! It got heavy rotation here in Ohio. But then when he did the video...he did the album version. Prince really needs someone who can tell him what song will be a hit single and what needs to be the first single etc. He's done some albums that I always thought with the right promotion and singles it could have took off. fro

I tell you why because it ain't the Prince people know. Most people recognise Prince through funky ass pop music. TGRES sounded like so many other R&B songs, albeit better delivery but overall it was generic. This is a really bad example of both Davis and Prince being too calculated and hoping to grab appeal to the R&B market and hope for airplay. I think for most of the 1990s Prince forgot who the hell he was..

I really dug The Greatest Romance. I had no problems with it. I especially liked the version with Eve. It got heavy rotation in the Washington, DC area.

some of my non-princefan friends thought this was a very, very catchy melodic song.

it just wasn't promoted with a "cool" video, and Prince's whole middle eastern long hair look on the packaging repulsed many non prince music buyers and listeners.

The song is good though, as far as the tune and music, the lyrics are too obscure for "pop" ularity.

I love the album version. The remix is ok but not as cool
as the original song. I really like that guitar solo at
the end a la "In This Bed Eye Scream" Pt II.

And for commercial success, I think it was a good choice.
Perhaps one of the more uptempo songs would have been a
better choice as lead off single but somehow I have the
feeling that it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

decent song, but nothing all that special, even though i do like it.

that's an album full of potential singles. unfortunately, none of them would be very strong singles. so, it might as well have been this one, if any.
