It's not really a "song". It's an introduction to an album the way Christopher Tracy's Parade and Art Official Cage were: these songs aren't meant to stand on their own, they serve as a warm up for things to come.

Seems like a song to me. We have From The Lotus serving the purpose you describe.

RIP sad

Yeah, I see your point. But I always figured those tracks belong together. From the Lotus as an intro, going into Boom... I always saw them as a whole, just like you can't really seperate the three opening tracks of Parade...

I need to dig out my copy from the lotusflow3r site. It had a nicer ending that transitioned into The Morning After rather than the abrupt transition to Crimsom and Clover on the retail release, if I remember right.
.
Volcano magic...summertime
.
Awesome track.

It was the version of the album that you could download with your lotusflow3r.com membership; digital only. Crimson and Clover wasn't on the digital version. It was replaced with The Morning After and had a different segue from Boom.

.

The physical vs. download version comparison is here:

.

http://www.princevault.co...otusflow3r

.

Makes no sense to this day since the video for Crimson and Clover was featured on the lotusflow3r.com site; but you could only get the song if you bought the physical release.

.

Prince, you baffled people.

Okay, thanks for the reply. I guess that was something that only made sense in Prince's mind. wink I never heared that version, but I really like The Morning After.

Boom just ends a little more clearly to me on the digital version, if I remember right. I downloaded the wav files from the site and burned a CD for safekeeping. I'll need to dig it out. On the physical release, it always bugged me a bit that the last beat of Boom is the first beat of C&C...kind of an odd blending.

Boom sounds like an inside out version of darling nikki. Lots of similarities musically.

Some of the nastiest lyrics he ever wrote. I always thought it was about a wet dream, based on the "celibate mushroom canopy" thing. He isn't really doing the deed, but he's dreaming about it. "Butterscotch mountains" (breasts), "run your fingers up and down the obelisk in the earth" (give him a hand job), "dine on one another's ooze" (oral sex), "volcano magic" (I don't think I have to explain that). Yeah - it's pretty much all there.

I've been meaning to get out the LP and run the choruses backward to find out what he masked.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

please do. there have been a few threads on it, i think possibly even one started by me
but i don't think there was ever any conclusive answer to what the backwards bits say
in this song. something about solomon, iirc?

they made navigating it so hard because otherwise you'd have sussed out
the fact that apart from the albums, there was no real content falloff
