goddamn, i only made it through to lines, boy george's voice is in horrible shape. just one more thing that made prince special, he kept on his chops all throughout the years. Most of his contemporaries really stopped working a long time ago.

It also helps that P didn't smoke. After he passed Sean Lennon tweeted that he quit smoking because P encouraged him to do so. But listening to those P&M shows I'm amazed at how good P's voice was; the high notes he could hit and how low he could go. A lot of artists lose that ability as they get older. Bon Jovi and Def Leppard don't sing a lot of their songs in the original key because Jon Bon Jovi and Joe Elliot can't hit the high notes anymore.

I noticed this too when I first saw a footage of his last concert in Atlanta (which was very shortly after he passed away). It was both moving and mesmerizing. That voice quality really was quite something, like his body might have been frail but his soul was still giving 100%.

It blew me away. People say P's guitar playing was underrated and it was but I'd argue his voice was too. I liked his voice better than Michael's. I think P had more range.

This is one of those times I will pass completely on even clicking the link for fear that even seconds of this tribute could taint the song eternally for me.

Bobby Z was at the show. He produced Boy George's second solo album. Boy George said that Apollnoia told him that Prince really liked Karma Chameleon and would listen to it all the time. They dedicated that song to him.

Love that he tweeted-- "Wear or bring something purple tonight! @RealCultureClub at the Myth Club in Minnesota 'keep a little Prince in your heart!". I love their music, too, and they have many good songs besides Karma Chameleon.

Many artists have jumped on the Prince death tribute bandwagon, a lot to simply sell more tickets.....there is a very disengenuous side to a lot of these tributes that is being missed.

I'm not sure which artists you are referring to, but Culture Club didn't say beforehand that they would be doing any Prince tribute.

You don't have any idea what You are talking about. They are genuine. On the day Prince died, Boy George tweeted "Today is the worst day ever. Prince R.I.P I am crying!"

Didn't prince like some of the old culture club tracks? I'm sure I read it in an interview years ago.

.

It's expected of all who perform in Minneapolis.

Paying respect is exactly what it is...and connecting with the audience.

I think it's wonderful.

I agree. His voice was incredible throughout his career. He was not the classic singer (Whitney, George, Sam Smith despite Oscar performance) but I prefer his voice to them all. He could convey so much vulnerbility (e.g., Condition of the Heart), soulfuness and funk (about everything), and could take a hard edge for rock (you know the ones wink ).

He made some lovely comments about Prince. And his version of PR wasn't that bad. But he also wasn't trying to "take us to church" with it. He just sang it short and sweet, said some nice things about P and that was it. Very sweet and genuine feeling imo.

according to Susan Rogers, he was crazy about Karma Chameleon and once left the warehouse while he left it playing on repeat. Rogers thought that he may have done it just to get on her nerves. At any rate, Prince used to tell interviewers that he didn't listen to anyone else's music. I always thought that that could not have been true because his production style was contemporary enough to where it was obvious he listened to the sounds around him. Oddly, he never outgrew this sentiment, he said he never had time to listen to new music because he was always working on some himself. I never bought that for a second.

Haha that's true he did stick with that line! Another example of him listening to and appreciating his contemporaries is when he wrote that very sweet note to Suzanne Vega telling her how much he loved Luka. I can only imagine how amazing it was to receive such a note from P biggrin

I never pointed to Culture Club as the offenders in my post.
