Favorite Cover Versions of Prince Songs

Which ones are you favorites?

1. "The Beautiful Ones" by Mariah Carey and Dru Hill - On paper this should not work as well as it does, but I love the arrangement and I think their vocals do the song justice. This has got to be a tough one to cover and I may be in the minority but I love it.

2. "Purple Rain" by Lavender Diamond- Again, an almost impossible song to pull off a cover to but I love how muted it is. She doesn't try to outdo the original but gives a fresh take.

3. "She's Always in my Hair" by D'Angelo - I love the instrumental on this, it's a little more hard hitting than the original.

I FEEL FOR YOU by Chaka Khan is wonderful!!! Even now when i hear it, i want to dance around my apartment and sing along...thats a great compliment to both Prince & Chaka biggrin

NOTHING COMPARES 2 U by Sinead O'Connor..the hollow vocals, the sadness she expresses, the loneliness she portrays in the song..its a masterpiece. Again, a major compliment to both Prince & Sinead.

I don't know what version you're hearing, but Mariah doing "The Beautiful Ones" is absolutely horrible. She's cooing like a pigeon in heat, I hate the slower tempo, and it has a tinny edge to it that makes my ears bleed, and dogs howl.

No one, ever, should cover "Purple Rain". Period. Ever.

D'Angelo did a good job on that song. Chaka's version of "I Feel For You" was a hit for a reason - it was great.

I always thought Mitch Ryder's version of "When You Were Mine" (1983) was what it would have sounded like, had the song been recorded past a demo stage. For me, it's superior to Lauper's synthy-new wave version.

Silk's version of "Adore" stayed very true to the original musically, but I can't totally get w/ the vocals.

I'd love to hear a band like Foo Fighters or someone do a rocking version of "Computer Blue".

Probably "How Come You Don't Call Me" by Alicia Keys. When her rendition of it was released in 2001, I was 13 at the time, and had never heard it before, but loved it---and I remember her referencing it as a Prince cover. It wasn't until years later that I finally heard the original, so Alicia's version is very nostalgic for me.
