what does he say at 3:43/3:44 in "ALL THE CRITICS LOVE YOU IN NEW YORK" ??

question

as always with prince's brilliant songs, there's something that jumps out at you
and smacks you in the face, even after 30 odd years, that you'd never noticed
before.

stuff like this amazes me. i've listened to this song, perhaps 1000 times and yet
this mumble at 3:43/3:44 is completely new to me today.

perhaps because i've made a better rip of the album and have new headphones
but i don't think that's it. there's always stuff like this in prince's music, where
i scratch my head and go 'did i just not hear that the first 200 times?'

lol

anywho. does anyone know what he's saying here? it sounds like several things
to me:

"f*ck my woman" or "f*ck my water" or even "f*ck my wallet" falloff but i'm quite
sure that's not it lol

anyone else know or able to make it out?

I don't hear "fuck", but I also have no idea. The guitar really drowns it out.

I do have a way to possibly find out...stand by.

Here's the lyrics on Google Play, which interprets it as "Fuck me over".

Body don't want to quit, gotta get another hit
Uh-uh, yeah, yeah
(Fuck me over)

Am I correct in inferring that the OP started this thread because "All the Critics Love U in New York" is the only song on 1999 for which there are no lyrics in the album booklet? Forgive me if it seems like a "dumb" question; I am a younger fan, born in 1986.

that's not a dumb question at all smile but it's not because the lyrics aren't in the booklet though.
i think that if they were, that mumble at 3:43 would still not be printed in it.

I checked w/ the owner of DTT Lyrics, and found the site on Archive.org.

The lyric was noted as being "on the one".

Body don't wanna quit, gotta get another hit {x4}

[(On the 1)]
All the critics love U, all the critics love U
All the critics love U in New York

What're U lookin' at, punk?

And that's what makes the most sense, and is probably right.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

it does make the most sense. it just doesn't sound like he's actually saying that lol

but DTT were always very much on point with these things so let's go with it cool

I THINK he played this during the seond 2009 Montreux gig - and he definitely says, 'On the One' in that performance!

Nice find I've never heard him speaking at that point after all these years! Sounds like fuck my wallet but on second listen probably more likely he is saying on the one wink
