Why? That makes literally no sense.

Please remember this is a last resort way of trying to resolve an estate. You've got a very wealthy man who died without first making a will and then not leaving behind a spouse or living children. Only after not having any of those things does the estate then trickle down to his siblings.

Yes, his siblings are his closest living relatives, and the law doesn't differentiate between full and half siblings.

Ugh, I bet whoever wrote that law was some half-sibling to somebody actually important.

Just make sure you have a will and it doesn't matter what your state's laws are regarding heirs.

Under Minnesota law, half-siblings and full siblings are treated the same. Since there is no known will at this time, Minnesota law decides who the heirs are.

You can move to Minnesota anytime, you just have to make a will. That way, your money will go to the people you truly want to have it.

how doesn't it make sense. I'm not sure how it would make any sense any other way. if you share a parent with someone, you're a direct relative to them.

It doesn't make sense that a half sibling gets anything! If you die, it makes sense that your children, your spouse, your parents, and siblings (legit, whole, the products of your 2 biological parents' union) get something. It makes 0 sense that the product of one of your parents' affairs with someone who you are not related to at all get anything. You might as well not be related at all because you had nothing to do with that. Tyka is the ONLY person it makes sense to get anything.

The law is ridiculous and written based on atrocious logic.

So it is Duane and his family who may not be eligible...USA Today story explains, http://www.usatoday.com/s.../87444204/

"Prince's other half-siblings through John Nelson, who have been confirmed by Bremer Trust, say in their affidavits filed with the court that Duane Sr. was ruled out as John Nelson's son at the time that John died in 2001 and his estate was settled in 2002.

More crucial is the lack of any documentation that John Nelson and Duane Sr's mother, Vivian Nelson, were married at the time Duane Sr was born in 1958. According to their marriage certificate, John and Vivian were married in 1938."

Duane and Prince were born the same year. The courts determined Duane was not John Nelson's son during John Nelson's estate settlement. If the daughter and grand-child are ruled out, perhaps the inheriting family will set up a trust fund for the grand-daughter's education. It seems they all considered Duane Sr. family.

Think before you write. Many of us have half-siblings whom we consider FULL siblings.

And we have no idea what relationship he had with ANY of his siblings, even Tyka.

Regardless, MN law states that both half siblings and full siblings are both recipients to his estate.

What's even more important... what will become of Paisley Park, his official music catalog, his vault and future releases? Hoping his long-time attorney and friend L Londell McMillen will steer this in the right direction for both fans AND his legacy.

Minnesota state laws aside, did Prince even have a relationship with any of these "Johnny & Jenny come lately" half-siblings? hmmm

.

Yes, he did.

They're not "come lately". Prince owned a number of properties and one half-brother (Omarr) lives in a home owned by Prince (as does sister Tyka).

I don't think there is anything wrong with the logic. My husband has 5 siblings (2 from his mother and 3 from his father). None of his siblings are full siblings; they are all half-siblings. But he never uses the term half-sibling. In fact, he finds the term to be offensive. A friend of mine has 3 siblings. Her parents have 1 biological child and adopted 3 children, including my friend. In addition to adopting my friend, they also adopted her brother (same biological mother, not sure if my friend and her biological brother have the same father also). So I think that making the definition of siblings to be inclusive of half-siblings is a good move. IF A PERSON WANTS CERTAIN SIBLINGS TO INHERIT HIS/HER ESTATE, HE/SHE CAN WRITE A WILL DEFINING WHICH SIBLINGS SHOULD INHERIT WHAT.

--

Prince didn't write a will, to anyone's knowledge, so the laws of the State of Minnesota dictate the distribution of his estate. Prince was well aware of wills. He was the executor/personal representative of his father's estate and signed off on an order distributing the assets equally among his five siblings. Source: http://www.startribune.co...77139151/.

I think Prince knew the law and had enough faith in the state of Minnesota. Prince knew everything would go to the siblings.
