"Purple Rain" -- the phrase

I just heard the song "Ventura Highway" by America, great tune with that amazing hook... Anyway, the phrase "Purple Rain" is in the verse. Anyone know what this expression refers to, and was P alluding to that expression in the PR title/song?

the 1 estimation that I recall is what I think I read from the Jon Bream book "Purple Reign"..

"purple" - the color of the sky just at (or just before) dawn..

"rain" - the "cleansing factor"


in other words, a "new beginning"..
which for Prince I suppose it was...

That's very nice, does the phrase 'Welcome to the dawn' have any connection to "Purple Rain"? Sounds like it can/does...
