My recent roadtrip with Prince as my co-pilot. I wanted to share this somewhere where I thought it might be appreciated. I have been a member of the org for close to 5 years now but have been behind the scenes reading alot, learning but never posting much.
I recently had the opportunity to travel for work where I drove from Florida through Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky to NC and then back to Florida. I spend 2 hours stuck in traffic going through Atlanta (imagine that) but my thoughts went to the Fox Theater and how tha must have been to be there for the last shows. I still regret missing those shows.
It was a total of 28 hours of driving over a period of a week.
I took my entire Prince collection with me and listened to album after album in no particular order. It was one of those opportunities with no one else in the car to tell me to turn it down, I don't like that song, can we listen to something else (I am sure some of you can relate!). It was just me and Prince as my co-pilot playing every song as loud as I wanted, singing along, playing some steering wheel guitar.
Along the way there were songs I hadn't listened to in years, some that maybe I never really took the time to listen to the lyrics and contemplate the meaning. It was a complete blast. There were moments where memories of good times, old flames came flooding back and then times of shedding tears. Like many of you Prince is the soundtrack of my life.
The final 2 hours of the trip I did save 1999, Purple Rain for last because those were the albums that all started my 34 year love of all things Prince. When I pulled in my driveway I sat for a moment and thanked Prince for what he meant and means to me, told him I wished he was still here. Though it wasn't a complete healing moment it did help. I will have the opportunity to do it again in October and I can assure you that Prince will be along for the ride again. It was an experience that I can't really do justice with my words and I am sure this is a rambling mess, but if you get the chance to do something similar I would recommend it.

I loved this and can totally relate. At the end of may I drove to colorado from MN and back and did the same thing. I listened to all the old stuff and had recently bought some of his music that was missing from my collection so I saved that for the trip too. It was awesome. I think it was a turning point for me in the grieving process. It's the first time I was able to listen to his music. I found new meaning in the older stuff and new favorites in the "new" stuff. I'm making the trip again in a couple weeks and plan to add some more Prince to my collection before I go  [Edited 7/20/16 19:58pm] It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. That's a great story, thankyou for sharing it. I'm still not completely over his death. And haven't played much of his music since. I have gone another way and bought a vinyl player and collecting old classic albums and getting into artists that I wouldn't have before like Art Garfunkel! That's where I'm at, at the moment. Still can't believe he's dead. |

This post touched me. I've been watching every performance I can find online. Every video, every interview, every concert...
I need to see him physically moving around for some reason. I'll be visiting my kids and granddaughters in Florida in a few weeks. My iPod will be dedicated to all things PP for the trip from NY. I can't think of a better co-pilot. Thank you for this. [Edited 7/21/16 7:14am] | |
