Question on Prince songs and his relationships How come there are no songs regarding Shelia E. according to the org?
There have been countless threads about the various love songs of Prince and the women in his life but I've not seen Shelia's name even mentioned though she's the longest lasting female relationship in his camp. Seems odd there aren't a few song with her mind. Heck even CJ got one. |

The only person who thinks they had anything besides a musical relationship was Sheila E. Yes, he "proposed to her", in the same way when a girl at the poker table check-raised another dude, and I said, "Wow, will you marry me?"
That didn't make us engaged.

So she's a complete delusional, livng in a fantasy world all these years. Because there's no possible way they had any type of close relationship where they talked to each other any time off the stage. Got it. [Edited 7/15/16 6:29am]

They had a romantic relationship apparently but it's difficult to pinpoint any songs about her. How about Noon Rendezvous? I love that song, it's one of my all time faves of prince. Baby, you're a star.

Prince sang that live in one of his concerts and said this is dedicated to that Sheila E dame. You just reminded me about Noon Rendezvous. |

I have that version and love it. I think looking at Sheila's early albums there may be songs prince wrote about her. I'm not sure. The Belle of St Mark as far as i know is about him but the song is about unreqiited love. Love Bizaare? Again, thesse are my fave prince protégé songs..I love that era and think these songs suited Sheila very well. [Edited 7/15/16 8:01am]Baby, you're a star.

I think there's a real difference between being a muse and a collaborator, especially a musical one. If a woman was primarily a muse, Prince wrote a lot of songs about them and they had very weak material they weakly performed at best. If a woman was primarily a collaborator, there weren't as many songs but those songs tended to be stronger, imho.
Sheila E was one of the few female collaborators that could hold her own on a stage with Prince in terms of presence.

But in all these years not ONE song had anything to do with her? They had some kind of relationship that I'm assuming involved sex, so there was more than a collaboration going on. |

I'm just thinking, with someone he shared so much intimacy with, so much a part of his life. They've gone through some THANGS together. For a man who communicates his feelings through his music even one song seems paltry for someone who has ridden that crazy train for so long.
Yeah, I know they were not as close but still they had a very long personal history. And she seemed to be friends with all the exes and other band mates.

Perhaps there are songs in the vault. Or perhaps the energy that would have gone into writing muse songs ended up going to collaborative bits in all of these other songs. One of the features of being a muse is that you often end up being a channel or a sounding board for creativity that gets hijacked.
Maybe it was her personal history at the time (wary because she came off a relationship with Carlos Santana, the abuse) which made her wary of being sucked completely in? She also seems a lot stronger willed than many of his muses or women he was romantically linked with.

I think it's because they had a more deep professional relationship than a personal relationship. She was more than just one of Prince's muse, she was a great talent on her own and she added a different sound to Prince's music which helped him lead a path of always experimenting while still keeping the "Prince sound" if you know what I mean. I don't know how akin to sex performing was for Prince, but I suspect Sheila and Prince exchanged most of their creative energy on stage. I think he was also in several very intense relationships with other women at the same time Sheila and Prince were romantically linked. Most of his romantic songs seem to be about a gap between what was actually happening and what he wanted to happen...so. How many "We make great music together" songs does he actually have?

I don't get the sad face about writing it together. How many times did they perform it as a duet?

I don't see why Shelia would lie, she wrote a book, it came out long before Prince passed so I'm going to go by what she says, they had an intimate not just a working relationship. Ever single woman Prince has had a relationship with people here seem to be able to say which songs are about each one of them. And I just happened to noticed, no one seems to know any that are specifically about Shelia. It just seemed very odd.

Thanks for bringing this up, morningsong. I have some observations... I thought that he and Sheila's relationship was also mostly platonic - until I saw the 2007 ALMA awards performance. Their performance begins innocently enough, but after he goes and wraps his arm around her shoulders/ upper torso and sings, you can see a visible chubby as he walks away. He has on a winter white turtle neck, and matching long jacket and pants in this show. A picture of this very moment is posted in another recent {derailed} thread. The rest of the performance he kind of dances around her and her drum kit, and it kind of looks like a rooster preening. Anyway - this peaked my interest - enough to go get her book from the library. There is more to this relationship than meets the eye... I personally believe the protege verse in "I Love You But I Don't Trust U Anymore" could be about Sheila. No disrespect to other org threads... I'm a believer in his and Vanity's story too and I'll also stan for Mayte... I just think the song fits better with Sheila.
Similarly, I think "Somewhere Here On Earth" is with Sheila in mind. She was always out there travelling, grinding for her career. She was essentially P's work wife, but never really able to be put up on a shelf and just be for Prince like he really wanted from a wife. Listen to me closely as the story unfolds
This could be the saddest story ever been told.... |

PurpleBabied did day that 'Sheila and Prince were romantically linked'... but he was ALSO with other women (Susannah and whoever). When I watched the 'Forever in My Life' video both Susannah and Sheila were in the video. To me, my impression is that he wrote the song for Susannah but I noticed Sheila in the background beaming probably because they were intimate and she thought this song was for her. But I wonder, didn't she know that he was also with other women, Susannah especially? |

I'm learning to stay away from the Prince and Sheila E relationship because for some reason most people don't think it really happened. I for one disagree. I think they were in a romantic relationship on and off throughout the years. #LoveU4EverMyPrince💜💜💜 |

I don't say that to suggest she lied, it's to explain why if they had a romantic relationship there aren't that many songs about her. Their chemistry (link to an '80s performance) on stage is undeniable. |

I got the impression that Sheila did know from the book. She mentions him going away to film UTCM, like it was a break in the relationship. Some things are only implied in her book, there is some reading between the lines... We know that he was with Susannah there in Nice, at least to begin with, and that Prince, Susannah, Wendy and Lisa were living like an artists' commune for some time, presumably after the Purple Rain tour (when P and Sheila first became intimate and regularly shared a room, according to her book). She says when they were on the road, they were together and it was not a secret among the band.
I find it telling though that she bought her own house in MPLS. Clearly, he didn't seem to acknowledge the relationship at home.

All my life I've kept my feelings deep inside Never was a reason to let somebody know Lover here, lover there, Who cried? Who cared? Foolish pride Never was a good seat at any of this man's shows
Until now all I wanted to do is Do do do what I do, and Bang bang bang on the drummer <--- He's talking about Sheila here And love so-and-so
But now I've got to let it go (let it go) Lay back and let the vibe just flow I want to just let it go (let it go) Lay back and let my feelings show (let it go) I'm ready for the real Give me something I can feel
