Love these Prince stories. There are so many of them. I always wondered about the recording session for "Waiting Room." Some seriously layered harmonies on that one.

8 hours. Whew. Well, it was worth it, because I love it. If we both want the love, and I wait long enough, then the ground that we're on might be common. Do, do, do, do, do, do. dancing jig

Thank you for this! I'm not a Stern listener so I didn't know she was on, went and looked up the whole interview too. I heart Gwen. Howard tells her he thinks Prince was interested in her and she could have been "Mrs. The Artist" lolol

Yeah, I was gonna ask, is there a lot more on the "Waiting Room" recording session in the radio version of this interview?

Always loved the song, would love to hear the original demo, because I remember when I heard the demo to that Kate Bush song he played on I was blown away because he completely changed the song, and he didn't even get a writing or production credit for that one.

No, that's pretty much all there is about the actual recording. She talks about how he went to one of their shows when they played in Minneapolis one time, how nice he was , how he didn't hit on her at all, how awful she was w/ him onstage in 2011, how he remarked upon a Jennifer Lopez song on the radio telling No Doubt that she was their competition

Full interview on Howard Stern. Prince bit starts around 41:00 mark. When did they actually work on Waiting Room? Gwen says he was going by "The Artist" at that time but then also references Batman. But Prince was still Prince when he did Batman. confused

I think what she meant was that Waiting Room felt like something off the Batman soundtrack to her.

"Waiting Room" would be Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic-era, around the time they also recorded "So Far, So Pleased" together. Maybe he told her the title track was a Batman outtake and the memories mashed.

thanks eightiesbrat & rogifan, I checked it out and am glad I did.. ha, I love how all these women in interviews don't even bother trying to attempt to play it like they weren't completely attracted to Prince.

In this interview Gwen says she wishes she had learned how to play an instrument. I hope that's a lasting legacy of Prince - getting people to learn how to play an instrument. I'd say the same thing about his work ethic. A lot of artists could learn from that.

He certainly inspired me to learn, back in high school and a little bit beyond. Currently, Ic an play sax very well, guitar a little bit, and trumpet a rank beginner. I can't afford to buy an intrument these days, but I'm glad I know how to play at least one.
