I have to admit that when I first listened to prince I hated it. The only songs I could sit through were 'My Name is Prince' and '7'. However, recently I decided to give it another listen and I am IN LOVE with this album. The music, the lyrics, the everything. 2the9s, the Morning Papers, and Blue Light are my favs on this one. Just thought I would share this with the rest of the org. music worship smile

I love this cd and have listened to it regularly since it first came out. There are many different types of songs on this cd which I find quite interesting. When I listen to My name is Prince, it blows my mind. Although, I must admit that I have to listen to it cranked up high.

It's among my very favorites, too.

Took me a few listens to get into, and and to truly appreciate a few songs, but now I've gotten to the point where I absolutely love the entire album.

Engh.

I like just a few selective things about this album. The ccover artwork was very very interesting to me. Very spiritual and futuristic.

The things that just made me cringe was all the rapping and hip hopness of some songs.

2 The 9's is a fabulous song! But I just nearly go insane when I hear Tony M! Aaargh! headache I wish there was an edited non-Tony M version in the Vaults!

The video from that song is great too, Prince looked awesome in that red outfit and swashbuckler mustache and cool hair, I think one of his best looks.

I think the album should have been edited down from the bs songs.

I also very much dislike Sexy MF. Yep, I do. I think it was the song that set the stage for some ridiculous Glam Gangster Rap...what the f was that? Yuk.

That's what dissapointed me the most, the rapping and silliness. But at times it was exciting. The ABC Ryde Devine special was cool. But that again that whole Hip Hop stuff just really turned me off. The video for My Name is Prince is one of his worst..."Funky Fresh 4 the 90's"...eeeesh.

I also thought the band lacked something when compared to the Lovesexy band or The Revolution. Too much something, or too little of something...charisma? I don't know.

ok yes, tony m is a bit hard to take but i think that the beauty of the album over powers him. 2the9s would be a much better song without his stupid booty boom section. The silliness of the CD is what makes it fun for me. If that album had tried to take itself too seriously then it would have just sucked.
Sexy MF, and the video for 'My Name is Prince" (as well as the song itself) lightened up the album, IMO.

A homage to this great album…

My name is Prince : The track that got me hooked on Prince
Sexy MF : The first Prince song I heard (and video I saw)
Love 2 the 9’s : Sexy scratches
The morning papers : Really sweet lyrics
The max : Funky as F censored
Blue light : Silky smooth
I wanna melt with you : Turns me on at just the thought
The continental : 3 quarters in a glass
Damn U : Cute, sensitive
Arrogance : So funky it hurts
The flow : Raw talent
7 : Beautiful, the start of something wonderful
And god created woman : Grown men could cry
3 chains of gold : Better than Bohemian Rhapsody (I think)
The sacrifice of Victor : Amen

Nope. And don't get me started on it! Let's just say, I personally think it's fake Funk. No musicianship inspiring just crappy. Even "Bands" in RnB now have to "look" hip hop-y. I can't stand it when I see a drummer or a bass player wearing sports team, basketball, clothing. C'mon.

Yeah man! I was dissapointed in way back then. I mean, Diamonds and Pearls was what really started it but, the band, lost it's magic in a way.

Sure, they're all gifted musicians, dancers, but, you know...? Too much I think. With Mayte, the dancers. Moving the cool guy from bass to guitar was cool but maybe that changed the dynamic of the band a bit. It kind of became clowny maybe.

Yeah, I guess you could look at it as a joke, but...it still was an unfortunate direction. Maybe necassary because perhaps WB needed him to appeal to kids and sell alot of records.

But I can see the fun of it sure!

I loved this album from the first time I played it.It is a breathtaking album from beginning to end.I still play it quite frequently.Prince sounded really energized and inspired on these tracks, like he was really in love or something. For me,the highlights were...

"My Name Is Prince"
"Sexy MF"
"Love 2 The 9's"
"The Continental"
"Damn U"
"7"
"And God Created Woman"

But,the other songs are cool too.I know alot of fans don't like Tony M. and the hip-hop that Prince was using in his music, but on this album,it fits perfectly, imo.

I loved the album when it came out, I couldn't get enough of the continental and the max. I used the My Name is Prince and Sexy MF maxi singles to wake up to for a year. I don't listen to that often now, it just seems to be one of those (rare) Prince albums that has dated somehow. It was a bold follow up to D & P and in many ways better but I didn't enjoy it that much last time i played it and I can't remember the last time I watched the Vid. Not in my top five I'm afraid.

woot!

"I Wanna Melt With U"--makes me freakin' melt, Dude!!! Talk about slave to the rhythm nod

Also, "The Continental/How U Wanna Be Done" is the BOMB!!!

This album truly offers everything a Prince fan could want to hear. It exudes sexiness, silliness and just plain FUNK!! I admit that it had to grow on me as well, but it is now definitely one of my all time faves music
