Call My Name

I always thought this was a beautiful song, and then I found an interview in which Prince talked about this song.

And does he want order, too? ‘Yes. I believe in order. What am I feeling now? Have I got peace? Yes. I’ve never felt this peaceful before. Can I be more peaceful? Maybe not. But I can make a song for this peaceful place? Yes sir. Call My Name [a sweet ballad from the new album] – that’s a song about peace.’ He leans forward on the sofa and half-talks, half-croons the lyrics. ‘I can’t stop writing songs about you, I love you so much. You see, you’re trying to speak the truth in a song like that.’

It sounds, I say, like a love song to your wife Manuela. He smiles. ‘Is it about love, or is it about the Creator? It could be both. I don’t like to talk about my songs. Let people make up their own minds. I can’t stop telling people about you…’ He sings it softly. ‘You see how lovely that is?’

So, I say, you are no longer a hedonist? He arches an eyebrow and smiles. ‘Hedonist? For years, I didn’t even know what the word meant.’ And now you’re satiated?

‘Satiated…’ He lingers on it. ‘That’s a lovely word. I was satiated a long time ago.’

I think that many of his songs that people assume are for other people, for the women in his life, are actually love songs for the Creator. He sure seems to view them that way from the interviews I've read in which he would actually talk about a song's meaning or who it was for. And those are few and far in-between.

I think the reporter got it wrong or something. The song was written during his marriage to Manuela and he said this about it back then:

I love this song..it's so sincere and passionate. I think it's a prayer. That's what I hear.

Hmmm....I think Prince could have told many different women a certain song was inspired by them or gave them the impression it was. I had worked a long time ago, with a woman who dated him for a minute,( actually I don't know if dated is the right word), .This was before I had met her. She was very beautiful alot skinnier back then, but she was under the impression Eye Hate U was written about her. So it is hard to know which songs were inspired by which women...but probably not all their fault for making an assumption, maybe Prince may have given several different women the impression a certain song was written about them. He could be crytic like that.

But he surely did love God so it is very possible a blending of his love for our creater, a certain woman, an experience triggered feelings/inspiration and he gave birth to a new song. It sure would be interesting to watch him create a song.

Seems to me he's been doing the double entendre for years now. I always assumed a lot of his songs have multiple meanings.

Let people make up their own minds.

Artist say that all the time and they get on my nerves with it. wink You know what you meant when you did what you did. So tell me dammit!! Tell me NOW!! grrrr...

He said to Oprah that he had said the first time he laid eyes on Mayte "There goes my future wife" or something to that effect. He later admitted to Rosie that he was just being rambunctious when he said it and hadn't really felt the connection at the time. "Little did I know.."

I think we should not be surprised that he has said different things at different times. Every word from his lips (sigh) are not carved in stone. He just said what was on his mind that day. Like we all do.

I totally believe that a lot of his love songs are to the creator. He loved God more than anything throughout his life and to the very end.

I am also not surprised that he said it was for his wife. "Who did you write that song to, dear?" "Why, you of course, darling." He wanted peace in his marriage like any other man. LOL

Looking at the lyrics of "Call My Name," the first verse first says the following:

--

Heard your voice this morning calling out my name
It had been so long since I heard it
That it didn't sound quite the same, no
But it let me know that my name had never really been spoken before
Before the day I carried you through the Bridle Path door

--

It would make sense for the song to be about Manuela because my understanding is that when they lived in Toronto, they lived in a house in the Bridle Path neighborhood, and he clearly refers to Bridle Path in the song.

Hi Benni Dear!

I so agree - double meanings to many of his lyrics. I feel that a lot of them were channeled from Spirit so that human mind will wrap a human meaning around it but the ocean from which the lyrics and music, the total package flowed through Prince, he and HE knows the truth.

In the Father's House, there are many mansions.

"I would die for U" always reminded me of the ego dying for Higher Consciousness...

I think I found this link here on the org: https://m.youtube.com/?re...23qp1t4yg#

Here's the accompanying interview: https://m.youtube.com/wat...wdu0iw4%3D

I found both very interesting.

As a side note, religious dedicants of both genders who find their religious beliefs in the bible often refer to their religious relationship in terms of being in a "bride class" where they are in subjection to deity. JWs also have this as part of their beliefs.

Catholics nuns wear wedding rings to designate themselves as "brides of Christ".

Just sayin.

Yes. It's not uncommon. So, in the song it could imply that relationship as well as the traditional bride & groom.

Besides, a bridal path is also where one rides horses, no?

I just think this is simply a beautiful song about heart and how it can beautifully change the world and the people it touches. And since "God is Love, Love is God" (Anna Stesia).

Heard a voice on the news saying people want to stop the war (stop the war, hmm!)
If they had a love as sweet as you they'd forget what they were fighting for
What's the matter with the world today?

Interestingly, "The song was most likely recorded during The Rainbow Children sessions" (wikipedia).
