Led Zepplin, Joni Mitchell, Santana

Charlie Chaplin,

James Brown, Chaka Khan

Some of Prince's influences were from a visual aesthetic, some where from stage presence, others were from actually song creation/writing.

I don't mind that, because that was the only period in recent history that delivered songs and colors. Led Zeppelin, for example, would make you feel differently on each song.

If they really listened to my stuff, they'd hear more of a Santana influence than Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix played more blues; Santana played prettier.

There are definetly some influences here and there:

- I can hear the Jimy Hendrix influence in Purple Rain, with the proclamatory tone ("You say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind!..." and the guitar solo at the end of "I could never take the place of your man" (Jimi's style).
- Also I think in some respect Prince's voice is similar to Sly's.
- I was listening to The Word the other day and it occurred to me that the guitar at the end sounds like Santana's.
- Money Don't Matter Tonight has always reminded me hugely of Steely Dan's Hey Nineteen.

James Brown played a big influence in my style. When I was about 10 years old, my stepdad put me on stage with him, and I danced a little bit until the bodyguard took me off. The reason I liked James Brown so much is that, on my way out, I saw some of the finest dancing girls I ever seen in my life. And I think, in that respect, he influenced me by his control over his group.

Another big influence was Joni Mitchell. She taught me a lot about color and sound, and to her, I'm very grateful.
