I'm realizing I'm unconsciously picking up some of his traits. I'm a woman in her early 50s. And it still looks good on me. I learn from the best. No, I haven't become a dancer or singer. It's when I walk around doing my day, I'm noticing that I've adopted some of his affects, without even realizing it. Body and facial movements and more. Like the way he would turn his head suddenly. And the mouth twist thing. And the way he'd look around while turning his head slowly when he walked. I'm a spiritual woman so I don't get cocky, but I am feeling more sexy these days. Prince wasn't cocky either. He attracted people with his humor and inclusion. Prince has helped me with my self-esteem, and it's happened by observing the things he accomplished personally (spiritually), like the way he was always himself and he didn't care what anyone thought. And it's from starting to let him go now while enjoying his music and appreciating who he was, and praying for his peace and happiness. I want his soul to be at peace. God. The man was so cool. There's no one I'd rather emulate if I had to. Incorporating a bit of Prince into all of us is not a bad thing. [Edited 7/11/16 10:29am]

cool yes i feel like prince assimilated as much coolness as possible from everything he ever experienced. he was jimi, james, and so many others, as well the faces as many screen actors. hes a one stop school of cool.

I'm noticing that I'm starting to speak more like him. Like, I use "folks," and, "dig it," and "funk," a whole heck of a lot now. I never used them before I heard Prince use them. I feel comfy and sexy in my own skin now (as a 24 year old), which I didn't prior to his death. I think that's largely because I've had his influence in my life over the past 80-some (? Oh CRAP, I've lost count!) days, and he always spoke about being comfortable with who you are first and foremost. I've learned a lot over these past few months from him!

Being comfortable with who you are. Yes. This is it.
Glad you also found him to be such an example 💜

Me too! I'm so glad he came into my life when he did (although the circumstances were EXTREMELY unfortunate), because I'm kind of in the process of finding myself right now, and his wisdom is really helping me a lot! I know that others here have gone through the same thing back in the 70s and 80s actually growing up with Prince, so I don't quite have the same experience as you all, but I'm just now finding myself, and he's teaching me! What a great life mentor he was/is.

Life mentor ... That is a little scary. Prince was just a guy that made great music. Not a prophet, idol, magician, or leader...just a guy who left us all too soon but entirely mortal

His music was magic, and he was certainly an innovator and leader in a multitude of fields. Take your negativity elsewhere.

I love it I just point out no celebrity should be idolized or a mentor and its perceived as negativity Prince was brilliant, capable of great generosity and I miss his contribution to the music world but I believe he stated he wanted to be a follower of his spiritual beliefs. He was a leader in the industry but not a leader of people Magick - it is an abstract concept what I meant is he is not a guru or spiritual leader. He was a gifted musician indeed. How is that negativity?

falloff at this thread!

-

My unsolicited .02: I emulated some of Prince's looks, fashionwise, over the years (especially when I was much younger) because he had some FREAKING COOL LOOKS and styles. But what I did was just superficialities like clothes and makeup or hair and was mainly during the PR era where his style was so popular anyway. When it gets into adopting affectations and studying him so closely that a person copies his mannerisms and facial expressions, then I think that's kind of strange because it seems like a person is trying to usurp another's (in this case, Prince's) identity -- and I don't know, I just don't think Prince would be flattered by that, I think he'd have been weirded out by it, to be blunt.

-

Though I do think it's great to recognize Prince's positive qualities and try to be a better person by following his example. That's a whole different thing, imo, and Prince being a 'role model' in that respect makes sense to me...like his philanthropy and generosity, who wouldn't want to be more like that, period? Be a good person? I think Prince WOULD be flattered and honored that anyone would become a better person because they followed his example in that way.

-

But again, affectations of his personal mannerisms and movements and etc seems strange to me. TO ME. Because whatever makes somebody happy and isn't hurting anyone else and all that. smile yes

Trying to sound and act like someone else seems to indicate you're not yet comfortable with who you are. Food for thought. I wish you luck in your quest of self-acceptance.

Taking the hero worship three steps too far!

I get that people want to move and dance like MJ, Elvis or Prince, imitation being the most sincere compliment, but if you're sitting there thinking "Oh I just turned my head like Prince" or "I walk like Prince now", that's uh... you know, just be yourself! When Janelle channels Prince in the way she moves during a tribute, it's a hommage and you can tell Prince was appreciative of that. But what he didn't like was people flat out trying to sound like him in a way that is co-opting, not hommage. I think that's why he wasn't too pleased with D'Angelo -- not that I think D'Angelo is/was imitating Prince, he's an artist in his own right, but Prince might have felt he was trying a little too hard to make some of his stylings "his".

I think as fans, our level of interest is high enough without getting into moving and talking like him, maybe it's time for a break you kind of feel like his personality is posthumously merging with yours.
