Of the 80s Big 3 Prince was the only one to have a year-end #1 single

When Doves Cry was the year-end #1 single of 1984 (in the US). Neither Michael Jackson nor Madonna accomplished this feat (Billie Jean was #2 in 1983 and Like a Virgin was #2 in 1985). I just thought that was a cool stat considering I think both MJ and Madonna charted more #1 singles than Prince over their careers.

I'm referring to #1 single for the year. Billie Jean reached #1, but the #1 single for 1983 was Every Breath You Take by the Police. Neither MJ nor Madonna had a single that was the #1 single for the year. Prince did in 1984 with When Doves Cry.

Yep, exactly. I'm from Jersey and in the early 80s I was in high school, and I remember one of my good friends who is a huge Bruce fan, complaining about how Prince took the number 1 spot from Bruce with "When Doves Cry" ... but in the next breath, he admits he went through 3 cassette tapes of Purple Rain in his car's cassette deck ... lol!

Well here's one to float your boat; Purple Rain, the album, which spent 24 weeks at #1, wasn't even in Billboard's Top 10 albums for 1984. They had some crazy methods of chartology.

Bruce Springsteen didn't make the top 10 either even though Born in the USA did top the charts for several weeks. WTF.
