Top 10 Guitarist Hello Everyone,
I recently got into discussion on top 10 guitarist of all time with a co worker. He said Prince had no place there are he could not see Price in the top 20. I was trying to gather a list of who ppl think are the top 5 to 10 guitarist of all time. Please make sure that you understand that is is built on skill not type of music. Names that have come up are Eric Johnson Randy Rhodes Hendricks Stevie Ray Let me know where you think Prince fits into all this. Plus I need the back up to this also, I have played some songs but i need the hardcore stuff. thanks newpwrsol | |

Prince is a very good guitarist, but in my opinion he is not even as good as Mike Scott.
But that's just it...there isn't a way to quantify guitar playing skills so it all becomes opinion. | |

prince is great guitar player.he is better then mike scott.mike scott is good jazz guitar player,but he is very unintersting in other styles.
prince is great rock and jazz guitar player. check for his guitar phrasing on xpetation album. his use of notes is conventional. it comes from the heart.and he have tehniq also. lenny kravitz is average guitar player,he's not fluent ,he is mehanical. frusciante guy from red hot chilly peppers is awful solo guitar player. frusciante's power chords are ok,but his solo guitar is lousy. dave navarro is better. my list would be 1)jimi hendrix 2)prince 3)ernie isley 4)eric johnson 5)stenley jordan 6)steve vai 7)santana 8)steve lucather 9)eddie van halen 10)nuno bethencurt and special guest star george benson | |

I think Carlos Santana said that Prince was a very underrated guitarist in an interview I read a few months ago. i find this question a difficult one because its completely subjective. what one person thinks is a good one another person will say that person Sucks! witness the choice of LENNY K. while most people wouldn't put him on their list choosing him isn't wrong. if what U require in your axeman! me..i like a variety of guitarists and it comes down to their SOUL and uniqueness (ie versatility) how fast a guy plays ain't THE issue. my picks not in any order : lindsay buckingham.jeff beck,prince,jimi,jesse johnson, eric clapton,stevie ray vaughan,curtis mayfield (its the soul and uniqueness with Curtis. no wasted notes,ever!) johnny guitar watson (jimi took his attitude from this dude) kenny burrell (guys out of the top 10...steve miller,bb.king,buddy guy) | |

miles...U picked some BAD cats! i liked the way you
separated LEAD & rhythm guitar. A lot guys can kill on lead but can't play rhythm worth a damn. everybody you picked on lead is a master. people like Jimmy "chamk" NOLEn (the originator of the chicken grease funk rhythm guitsr style) know how important the rhythm is to a song. what makes me dig prince (and jesse J )so much is they absolutely KICK ass on rhythm! PRINCE'S flexibility is what most of his critics overlook. not many guys can play equally well on Lead & rhythm. oh yeah frank zappa was a MONSTER. EDDIE HAZEL was too. MAggot brain is BAD... PROPS to phelps collins & country kellum,too. | |

Jimi...no last name needed Ernie Isley Eddie Hazel Mike Hampton Wes Montgomery Stanley Jordan (may be #1?) George Benson Steve Vai (may be #2) Joe Stariani Eric MacFadden Honorable mentions: Eric Gales (the boy is BADDD), Eric Johnson, Charlie Singleton, Vernon Reid, Stevie Ray Vaughn, (good call on Chuckii Booker - he's a better pianist and a bad ass bass player, too), too many to mention. Prince didn't even come close to the top 10. Its funny how so many speak of Prince's versatility, but ALL of the guitarists on my list are versatile but have CHOSEN a style that they wanted to be known for. Prince is funky, but he ain't no Johnny Guitar Watson or George Johnson or Otis Redding II. | |

Wes Montgomery Mark Knopfler Robert Fripp Mick Ronson Johnny Marr Eddie Hazel Jimi Hendrix BB King Prince All players who are/were able to give a song a unique color with just a couple of notes, and keep guitarists and non-guitarists alike interested with their playing. Those, to me (guitar player for 17 years) are the hallmarks of a truly great player. There are more of course, but this is my top 10. | |

Blaqueknight...you know your guitarist. anybody who knows
the late Eric Gale,knows axemen. He was on a lot of sessions (via new york) back in the day. another superb session guy from the 50-60's was MIckey 'guitar" Baker. most r & b stuff i have from this period has mickey's jazzy-rock licks in the grooves (his cool playing on LOVE is STrange was sharp) the rest of your picks are first class,too. their are a lot of black guitarists who kick ass. again picking 10 is too difficult. stanley jordan (amazing techinque) eddie hazel,jesse j,ernie isley,mike hampton,phelps collins,jimmy nolen,charlie christian,t-bone walker (groundbreaking dude!..i'll kick lindsay b out and place t-bone in the elite 10) barney kessell,brian setzer,prince,carl perkins,les paul,keith richards (the master of the groove) charlie christian, django R,curtis mayfield,joe pass... the list goes on and on... | |
