I read this the other day. The guy is an imbecile. His major complaint seems to be that Prince (rightly) removed the rape reference in xtralovable. Robin Thicke.

Prince wins this on numbers everytime. If he has 3,000 songs and only 10% of them are good. That's 300 songs... which is 280 more than most artists.

So many nopes to this blogger, starting with the "not enough rape" comment. Let's not give him any traffic, folks.

He also thinks Prince peaked in 1986 and just churned out sanitized versions of his songs in the vault forevermore.

Another sign of cluelessness

How could he have ruined ‘Electric Intercourse,’ the bittersweet piano ballad that was almost included on Purple Rain?

"Bittersweet" is not a word I'd used to describe that song. Does anyone actually think that it's bittersweet, in and of itself?

He makes some good points. The raw energy of the original Extralovable was lost in P's remake of it. It's true and that's ok. Prince was a more mature man with more life experience who decided he didn't like what the original was about. And that's fine too. I like them both but I prefer the original.
I think what the writer is saying is that we as fans of the man who made such great tracks as All My Dreams and Electric Intercourse will be lucky if they are released as is with no updating. Because they are already that good. If anything this guy comes across as a true fan. I can't wait myself.
I would still trade having Prince still with us even if it meant never hearing anything from the vault tho. I miss him.

Except his main point is pretentious and over-reaching. He has no idea if the Vault's recordings are worthy or not. Even if he heard the unreleased tracks and didn't like most of them, it doesn't mean he's in a position to make the statement he is making, which would take a thorough knowledge of what is actualy there -- a knowledge no one has now that Prince has passed away.

Obviously Prince likely hoped people would enjoy his music, but he didn't set out to create hits or music others deemed good. He probably was aware that the songs he wrote would be well received, but beyond that he made music for the enjoyment he got from making music. He didn't release all his music because it would simply be impossible to release that many albums into the market. Some of it probably wouldn't even fit within a collection of music as an album and so it would never get released.

But the idea that he was driven by what he thought other people would think is good is nonsensical. We'd never have gotten 20Ten or that awful song for the Vikings if that was his concern.

I agree. The thesis of this essay is "The stuff in the vault isn't that good." Then the writer goes on to explain why 3 of the tracks from the vault are great. The thesis should actually should be "The stuff in the vault will remain as great as it is because Prince can't 'reload/update' any of it any more." The blog is poorly written and never proves or supports its own thesis, but if you take his title of the blog out I actually agree with most of what he is saying. He just needs a lesson in critical writing.

Didn't Prince once say in an interview that he intentionally didn't release a few of his best singles? Or maybe I'm dreaming that.......

"We had fun, didn't we?"
