Dancers--choreographed or free expression?

I've read stories where Prince gave other artists the freedom to create as they would when performing with him. Misty Copeland talked about it. Was that the norm for the dancers? Was there a performance plan and then the dancer created in that space so what they did, was their own?

"Hold on to your souls y'all. We got a long way to go. Thank you! We love y'all!"

Well, Misty is a professional ballerina, so Prince probably wasn't giving her huge notes on anything. I mean, the occasional "can you do _____ in this part of the song" or something, maybe.

With the Twinz, I can see it being a 50/50 input. At the point they came around, he wasn't really choregraphing his band the way he did The Revolution or the SOTT band. However, it was a different level of it with the Game Boyz, because they weren't always just backup dancers. He was in the mix, a lot. I think the Twinz, doing what they do, were probably given a lot of space to create choreography, albeit with Prince's input here and there. I think about the Super Bowl press conference, and that there were specific times they were close & interacted with him while he was singing. Most times they were just doing their thing; same with the game performance.

They certainly weren't improvising moves every night either. Freedom of expression to create, then nail down a routine and stick to it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Didn't Cat Glover choreograph both the SOTT and LoveSexy tours?

yes.

so she came up with prince's moves? also, most of the people who commented on her dancing on here didn't like it.

i never liked prince with dancers period! prince and the band for 2 hours = best thing ever!

cat was pure energy and in that way she was a good match for P because he is too onstage. her style is typical 80s street/club dancing.

++

the dancing bears were clumsy and off. a couple of times i was sure they were going to trip each other up or topple over in their cheerleading formations. lol they seemed to always be flipping prince around like a hot potato. and then they be rude to mayte and the other woman playing the reporter during the act l tour. no thanks.

++

mayte was harmless and you can tell she has technique, but their routines appeared to be mayte swinging her hair and then bending over so prince could look at and sniff her snatch, which was just plain crass and beneath both of them. how could you at that way with someone you truly loved and valued? behind closed doors is another matter, but in public every night? confused

++

the twinz also harmless and redundant... razz
