Question on Tidal downloads

Couple of questions (Mods I searched for a thread, found one but there was no way to Reply to it.)

I use Paypal and there was a $1 charge before I bought anything. Is that how it works? Will there be a surcharge on every purchase? Do you see it on credit card purchases?

Then, when I bought One Nite Alone, it won't download. Just spins and spins and no notice of anything happening. My browswer shows no downloads happening, but the wait spinner is spinning.

Any suggestions how to get the album I bought now for $10.99, not $9.99?

TIA

You can try to download it through Google Chrome or Firefox. If that doesn't work, then you could e-mail TIDAL support, tell them your situation and they should send you an alternate option to download your music. TIDAL is in the process of developing their systems for downloads to efficiency. With maturity, things will run much more smoothly.

Thank you all. I bought it from the Tidal Store. Have the receipt for the $1 and for the $9.99 purchase. MP3 download.

So that is all good, but the download is stuck.

Sent a message to support. It threw me off when the charges appear from someone other than Tidal (always a worry) an outfit in Sweden. Then the $1 screen charge was odd, then I got error messages but receipts and welcomes were arriving in my inbox.

We'll see... the one thread I found here noted troubles too. I use Firefox, who knows.

Thanks again and I can't wait to hear the album. I saw part of a live performance on YouTube and Prince was a hoot! The part where he tells the audience ""Y'all gonna make me dance like one of my relatives. ... You know you got one of them uncles who dance like this watch... and then he do the dip on you... watch out now "

And earlier after inviting a man and a woman to dance on stage, he stops singing and tells her not to do anything that will get him arrested, and then "Don't put nothing on him that doesn't belong to him." Oh gees!! He was in a fine mood. One Nite Alone Tour in LA.

So I am trying to buy the danged album. smile I prefer the CD, but those aren't available yet. I sure hope whoever has the ability will re-release some of the later material. In the meantime, if I can get the Tidal site to play nice, it will do for now.

Sounds like a slow server. Just try at an off-peak time and see. Report back here smile

IIRC, TIDAL was a Swedish company before Jay-Z bought them. There might still be some things in place from before.

The site doesn't work well through Safari, but works great through Firefox.

Tidal is based in Sweden. The company you saw is probably the one that oversees the tech aspects of Tidal.

I've never had a surcharge from Tidal, so maybe it's a fee for using PayPal?

I would contact their Customer Service and ask. They might refund it, or at the very least inform about it. I've had excellent responses from them.

I once used up all 3 of my download "licenses" (did some at work and some at home) but ended up losing the USB drive where they were stored. Tidal reset the download count after I emailed them.

I have had this $1 charge before with companies, it is their way of testing it is a real valid credit card and then the actual amount goes on. The $1 is refunded automatically. PayPal do the same thing with new accounts. It is just when you use the account with a site for the first time. If the $1 stays on there over a week, I would ask the bank about it.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Here's the update.

  • They never responded to my two inquiries other than a we'll be in touch note of receipt.
  • I was able to download my album two days later, in pieces. Very awkward download I had to piece back together to listen to it out of the temp files and dumped into an unknown artist file (could not find the album information or cover).
  • Then TIDAL slammed my PP account with another $9.99 for a subscription I did not authorize or request. That was the next day.
  • Their FAQ states there are no refunds.

All I wanted to do was to buy a $9.99 Prince album.

It cost me $21.

No refunds on the $1 btw.

I don't know if you need a subscription to buy music, but I am unsubscribed and they are blocked from accessing my PP account.

That wasn't fun.

I'm very sorry to hear about your bad experience with Tidal!

I'm no Tidal advocate (I'm not a subscriber and I think the FLAC prices are a bit high) but I have had no problems with their Store other than using Safari on a Mac (switched to Firefox and all was good). If Apple offered FLAC downloads at the same price, bye bye Tidal.

Seriously, contact their Customer Service and explain the situation. Keep trying. They might at least refund one of the download charges if it's the same exact album that was downloaded 2-3 times.

Your note about downloading the album in pieces and having to piece it back together out of temp files is very odd. I would explain that too.

Yeah, this one makes no sense. The only albums that didn't see a CD release were The Chocolate Invasion, The Slaughterhouse, Xpectation and C-NOTE too if you count that as an album.

Everything from Musicology up to HitNRun Phase Two has had a CD release, even if they're not widely available.

Maybe you meant that Tidal won't be selling Prince CDs?

Tidal came through and refunded the $9.99 unauthorized subscription fee.

Better.

I took those dollars and sent them to The Dream Corps to support Prince's youth programs.

Prince's One Nite Alone for me and a little gift to the programs that carry his legacy. All good. smile

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Well, if accurate, that would just mean they wouldn't be reissued until after all the rights issues get hashed out. Probably the same with Black Album. I expect that cancellation is due to the agreement made when it was released in '94, that it be a Limited Edition one-time only release. Ultimately all those deals and Prince's feelings only matter as much as the eventual rightsholders decide they matter. At this point it's anybody's guess, but I expect to see reissues of most if not all of his catalogue on vinyl, CD and digital... eventually. wink

Exactly - there's no doubt that remasters will happen now. It's really only a matter of time. Prince himself was the only one holding up that process.
