For people who think the afro could have been a wig: if it was a wig it would have been thicker and more tightly shaped. There were times I saw the afro and was like "damn, dude, fix that shit". I didn't like the fro on him anyway and the fact that it was often all over the place and uneven only added to it.
I still would love to have seen him go full on George Costanza/Larry david:

I didn't think his afro was a wig... The one that I thought was a wig (but I KNOW BETTER than that) was his curls in PR, but only for the scene where he and Apollonia are riding to (or from, idr which), "Lake Minnetonka." I guess it's just the way the sun/lighting hit his hair. And the snippet of time I'm talking about for when I thought it was a wig was literally .02 seconds of the movie; the rest looks completely real, so I know his hair was 110% legit in PR.

His hair was sooooo crazy thick in the 1999/PR phase, I always thought they put some pieces in to help achieve & maintain the style show after show. He definitely had weave help for GB. I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it |

I think he was just half-hearted about his 'message' after The Rainbow Children.
Remember, in the 80s, his harirstyles were just a facet of a larger statement he was making. Prince didn't give you a new sound--he gave you a new entire package (there is a definate penis joke in there I would like to explroe on a new thread by itself): sound, costumes, stage, ...and, yes.. hairstyles.
After the Rainbow Children, he dived into really mediocre stuff. Even the albums with themes (Planet Earth, Lotusflow3r) were largely half-hearted and abandoned shortly after we obtained them. Around this point, he was wearing the same hairdo for years and years, and then the fluffy fro up until he died. He probably had other things to think about than trying to get every facet of his album out--I miss the obsessive, everything-is-part-of-the-experience Prince... the one who released the complete package and obsessed over every detail to include what his backup band was wearing.
In the end, 20 years from now when all you assholed are old and farty, I don't think we're going to give a rat's ass about his hairdos---we'll be happily basking in the glow of seemingly endless masterpieces he left for posterity and obsessed over whether he slept with Morris or not.

Hi, I'm a new member, so don't kill me if I make a mistake! I saw P during the PR tour, Dallas on New Year's Eve 1984. We were in the 11th row, center at Reunion Arena. During the show, a little curly hair piece came off and landed on the stage at his feet!! He kicked it to the side. And kept on dancing What an incredible showman. He never missed a beat and at midnight they dropped silk roses on the crowd from the ceiling....magical!! He probably fired someone for the hair thing but he never even flinched and he still was gorgeous. I remember he had a lot of costume changes & lace eye masks. The Pretty Man, indeed. |
