Did Prince Run Out of Hair Styles?

I see in Prince later years he's been sporting the afro. Did he run out hairstyles?

Maybe he went back to it for the HEALTH of his hair, which changes & becomes more delicate as you age. He'd processed it for years, I was glad to see him give his hair a break.
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Ok this made me giggle so hard.Something like that would not have crossed my mind.

But I highly doubt it, as long as there are stylist I would think there are fresh ideas.

He probably just got tired of doing it or having it done all the time.

Also, after Earl Jones died, his hair never looked consistently wonderful again.

I think he was just half-hearted about his 'message' after The Rainbow Children.

Remember, in the 80s, his harirstyles were just a facet of a larger statement he was making. Prince didn't give you a new sound--he gave you a new entire package (there is a definate penis joke in there I would like to explroe on a new thread by itself): sound, costumes, stage, ...and, yes.. hairstyles.

After the Rainbow Children, he dived into really mediocre stuff. Even the albums with themes (Planet Earth, Lotusflow3r) were largely half-hearted and abandoned shortly after we obtained them. Around this point, he was wearing the same hairdo for years and years, and then the fluffy fro up until he died. He probably had other things to think about than trying to get every facet of his album out--I miss the obsessive, everything-is-part-of-the-experience Prince... the one who released the complete package and obsessed over every detail to include what his backup band was wearing.

In the end, 20 years from now when all you assholed are old and farty, I don't think we're going to give a rat's ass about his hairdos---we'll be happily basking in the glow of seemingly endless masterpieces he left for posterity and obsessed over whether he slept with Morris or not.

--- Doing the PR period his hair resembled a bird's nest. Kim Berry was doing his hair from 92 and on and she has done a few interviews about his hair.

Exactly. What a lame question. Does the OP think he was just running down a list of hairstyles in Black Hair Monthly, then when he got to the end, he was like "Ooops, back to the 'fro"??

As a former hairstylist, who also did black hair at times, black hair goes under a lot of stress from perms, hot irons, curls, etc. It breaks easily sometimes from the damage of chemicals, etc. I think Prince just found his roots again (no pun). And frankly, he probably got tired of fucking with it so much.

And Genesia, while Mr. Jones did a great job on his hair, Kim Berry started doing his hair in 1991/92. That's when his typhoon was in full effect during D&P & prince, which was a fantastic hair style.

I was a stylist at that point, and was a featured stylist in a Paul Mitchell show. I had this female friend, older, who was my model. She had shorter hair. I cut it, tinted it and did a modified typhoon on her, and even called it a Typhoon. People loved it. haha

His shorter hair after that period through the rest of his days looked just as good. The only exception being in the "Musicology" video. That tight little curl was a bottle of activator away from some Ready For The World for Full Force nonsense. But by the time the tour came around, it was looking good again.

For me, I think his afro was really harkening back to his roots, black empowerment, etc. People grew out their afros as a sign of bucking the norm, when they were pressured into either keeping it short, or hot ironing it straight to fit into white culture. In the 70s it really was a full on 'fuck you' to have one of them Angela Davis afros. Plus there's also been a huge move in black hair over the past decade to go natural again.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

What a great post!

Finally a professional´s opinion on Prince´s hair, and not only do you talk about his hair and its structure and the showbiz aspect of it, but you also get into the political message behind it, and you obviously know your subject matter.

It´s really a relief because most hair threads often verge on idiocy or end up in nothing but orgers saying ".....but I think he should´ve sported that Graffiti Bridge hairdo...." when it was actually a miracle that he still had such great hair at his age, let alone straighten it again like almost three decades ago.

Not even women have that much hair in their late 50s.

And strictly speaking , his afro went through different phases and never looked the same, and I especially liked it when it was huge and big during the England shows in the last two years and during the Piano & a Microphone Tour, so, as far as I´m concerned , he did not run out of styles.

That's how he wanted to wear it. He's pretty much sported every kind of hairstyle except the bald look. lol And the Mohawk. razz

Come on, his hair was a big part of his looks, and his looks were a big part of his whole persona.

I´m kinda surprised that the hair issue does not get discussed more often.

At least this is one of the better "hair" threads.

See, his hair was so important that he even covered GCS´s song "Hair" during the mid 90s .

I´m serious.

When you dont have a good hairstylist that actually takes care of your hair you go from that above to this then this...some uneven short ass hair...she messed his hair up!

I think the fro was a wig as well. That fro didn't move much. fro

But the natural is easier to keep and he could do it byhimslef and didn't need a stylist all the time. If he needed to he could wash it and blow it out himself.

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

Thank You Prince

But still adorable. I'm going from short to longer hair atm and sure wouldn't mind looking half as cute as he did doing that. cool lol

I loved the fro. He was so beautiful with a fro, no matter if he was a teenager or in his fifties. Beautiful with most hair styles, but something about the natural look.. Mmm.. Mmmm..mmmmm.. cool

The fro was not a wig. He posted a picture showing a part in the afro. Don't you people get tired of talking about the same old BS. razz

I still think that he decided to go natural after spending all that time with Andy Allo... Funny, how she changed her hair recently... I liked the short fro on Prince. wink
