I dont really like this album much, and i think in terms of covering styles, SOTT is a much better example of prince's versatility. I like a lot of the prince tracks but for me the problem with the album is its length. There just arent enough good tracks to warrant a double vinyl album here.
This IMO is where prince started to get the tracklisting for his albums toatlly wrong. I understand it was meant to be a soundtrack, but did we need all those Time songs? The only decent one was Release It (which is excellent). Why put that stupid NPG pt II on the end is similarly baffling, and to my ears Graffiti Bridge sounds like Andrew Lloyd Webber on a bad day. GB is marked up by The question of U, Joy In Repetition and Still Would Stand ALl Time ( a song that judging by the small club version he really failed to do justice to). This was our first example of Quantity over quality in P's career, setting the precedent for , Gold, Rave, & Emancipation. All albums that could have been amazing (not Rave...) but just ended up being good.

great review of GB and right on the money. but i've always found it funny that RS quotes lyrics from "love machine" and "release it" as if they are sung by prince...didn't they know? Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

'GB' has it's moments, but overall,it's not a cohesive album. One annoying thing about it is,a really good song (like "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got") is often followed by a lackluster song (in this case,"New Power Generation").The whole album is like that (the excellent "Thieves In The Temple" is followed by the absurd filler track "Latest Fashion").When you listen to this album, you keep waiting and waiting to hear the one killer song that will knock you off your feet, but it never comes.
As I mentioned above, the album does have a few cool moments..."We Can Funk" is wickedly funky and outrageous, and "Thieves..." is a Prince classic. With more great songs like those, the album could have been a fine piece of work.

RS gave this album 4.5 stars not 4.
They have not given Prince another positive review since.I believe that this 4.5 star review was a way of making up for less than glowing reviews of SOTT & Lovesexy .(3 stars)

I can see where you're coming from but had Graffiti Bridge, or any of those albums you mentioned, become massive hits, I'd be surprised if you would argue the same case. It is also possible that these albums failed to strike 'gold' for reasons others than the quality of the music (even Rave). Also, The Gold Experience is a very restricted piece of work in terms of what it could have been. In Gold's case, I would argue that it was a definitive attempt by Prince to present quality, and not quantity. I'm not saying he got it right but the intention was there.

This is where I firmly disagree, David. New Power Generation is a superb funk-filled R'n'B jam that deserves much more credit than you give. It is also part of a magnificently produced 5-strong-song start to the album. The album is a fine artististic statement, and one that successfully incorporates Prince's associated artists into his vision of the music (and ethos). Graffiti Bridge lingers...As I mentioned above, the album does have a few cool moments..."We Can Funk" is wickedly funky and outrageous, and "Thieves..." is a Prince classic. With more great songs like those, the album could have been a fine piece of work.

Then comes the drum blitz of "Release It," a James Brownish workout as fierce as "Housequake"
Seriously though, it's very nice to read a glowing review of anything by Prince. It does my good. The Normal Whores Club

too bad "thieves in the temple" didn't have "Joy in Repetition" as the B-side with the lone electro drum intro...
