I think folks are so used to seeing the retouched photos of him that to see a 'real' photo of him is surprising. That and how thin he looks.

Lighting is bad, but he looks great. I don't get the reservations.

I was stood within 10ft of him at a gig in 2014. He was still strong, even powerful looking, definately not that scrawny. No wastage, no turkey neck. Dude in this photo is seriously ill in my opinion. It's heartbreaking to see him like that.

. I wish I was 57 again, when I definitely didn't look that good. Now that I'm used to the photo, I love it. We all crinkle when we smile and he always did.
As small as he was, even a five-pound weight shift would make a big difference. Remember the photos of him at the 2014 Brit Awards, with the hat? He looks overweight to me in those images; almost a double chin and heavy cheeks. [Edited 7/6/16 15:31pm] Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

. Ever see a photo of yourself when the light is shining DOWN on your face, rather than straight on or upwards? Especially when it's colored lights that make your skin look strange? Yes, he's thin -- but we're not used to seeing him lit like that. He controlled his image very well.
There is a famous Larry King Live interview with Warren Beatty, where Beatty obviously has bright lights under the desk shining up on his face to hide wrinkles. .

. It looks like Auckland, NZ - Feb 24th, 2016. See how different he looks with this lighting?

what looks alarming to me is the slight wrinkles on his face (under his eyes) but again he was 57 and his neck...particullarly his adam's apple really stands out... I think these are some warning signs that we didnt as fans pick up on...

. His adam's apple was always prominent, except when he wore the typical high-collared shirts/jackets. . Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

He's had wrinkles for awhile, just most official photos have been photoshopped or touched up. I saw a picture in which the reflection showed the wrinkles (a few years ago) but Prince himself did not.

He looks happy and heck, cute. He was thin, definitely, and that's possibly because he wasn't eating well as a result of losing his appetite from painkillers, or because he was always kinda thin.
I've talked to my mother extensively about Prince's death because she is a nurse and frequently administers and monitors people on opioids. She has assured me that when he took them for pain he most likely felt well and happy when on them. Getting off them once dependent, that's a different story.

Right. I think this photo is sadly, horribly revealing. Yes something was definitely not right with Prince. I know most people think he looked good for 57, but just a year prior he looked really good for 56. He just changed so quickly. He lost a lot of weight, his skin sagged, and he looked really dehydrated. If he hadn't look so good for his age at 54, 55, and 56 this picture, along with others from this year, wouldnt be a cause for concern.

I will say this after looking again - his arm looks pretty thin, but the rest of him looks like my Princey, I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

I kind of found the becoming and well earned and to see him accepting them and not getting pulled and tugged every which way is a good thing. If it is all makeup and lighting that makes them vanish cool with me. Don't like his thinness at all, I'd be afraid to touch him, but the smile is there and the eyes seem bright from this angle

. Yes and that was 2014. Once you are in your 50s and 60s, 2 years can be a long f*cking time. . I love this pic and he looks happy and plenty healthy, whether he was, in reality, or not.

Totally agree. Sure we're all aging some, better than others, but this is a look of illness not aging. Would you let me wash your hair?

I saw and met Prince in 2007, many times and quite close. He was about 49 then and already had wrinkles, natural expression lines on his forehead and all around his face, like a normal man would at 49. With the right lighting on stage, you couldn't see any of it, but closer you could. This shows he was a natural beauty and didn't resort to any plastic surgery like most people do in the show business. People are so used to photoshopped pictures of young people and faces smoothed by botox injections and sculpted by plastic surgery, that when they see the normal face of an ageing person they get confused and think they're unwell. I am not saying that he wasn't because I do not know that. All I know is that the way he looks on here does not particularly shock me. Yes he had changed, yes he was older and thinner than before (naturally thin people tend to get even thinner as they age) and perhaps going through some health issues. But all I can see on this photo is his big great smile and happy face and I think to myself, wow that man was beautiful, even at 57. Life Matters
