Why did Prince never take credit?

I have noticed from all i have read here and elsewhere that when Prince worked with other artists he would write, arrange, produce, etc. but NEVER took credit, he'd give it to the women, umm i mean artists...lol wink like vanity, sheila, carmen, etc. i am so surprised because that would mean they would get ALL the royalties as well, correct?

Incorrect, it was all under his name on ASCAP just not on the album artwork.

-- Sheila E claimed she got royalty checks so must have put her name something and he played in loads of records without credit. Check out the Mob Deep story.

Oh he was very generous and co-writes exist but that doesn't mean they got "ALL the royalties" as per the original question.

How can Prince take credit when he never received credit?

In my opinion, Prince wasn't honored appropriately. I think people get caught up in a extravagant head space & they never once remember that he was just a normal man. They always seemed to give instrumentalist credit to Michael Jackson who didn't play any sort of instrument from what I know. I notice that EVERYTHING Prince has worked to do was honored through MJ. They weren't fair to Prince ever. I didn't even realize how much he actually did. He has lived a full life. He makes me want to go do stuff. smile

Prince certainly has a history of obscuring credit. Sometimes he gave credit to others that should have been his. Sometimes he took credit that should have been given to others. Sometimes he worked under one of his many psuedonyms. Sometimes credits were accurate for some songs and inaccurate for others on the same project. Sometimes he was credited when guesting for others, sometimes he was not.

I'm hoping the Mobb Deep story is just the beginning of what we will learn about after his passing. I'm sure that this is not the only track that we don't know he contributed to and I so want to learn about more. Is he on any Lenny Kravitz tracks? Wasn't it reported that he's on a Macy Gray track? How much did he really contribute to Superconductor? Is Paradigm the only non-Paisley Park release that he worked on with George Clinton? etc... etc.. etc...

I'm guessing that we have more than a few surprises in store... wink wink

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...

--- You are only going to get a portion of the royalties if you are registered as a writer. People he worked with who actually wrote something were fools if they did not get anything in writing. I could even getting taken once but serveral times not getting credit it is on you.
