Skeptical article regarding unreleased vault material

Moderators, I have looked whether this article has already been posted (and if I´m not mistaken is hasn´t ).

I´d like to know how you feel regarding this subject matter. Do you agree with the author? Have we already heard most of the interesting songs that are in the vault? Or do you think that there must be tons of hidden gems in there?

-

-

I´m a bit torn but I find the article a tad too critical. Sure, most of the really interesting songs such as the songs mentioned in the article are already known (Extraloveable, All My Dreams, Electric Intercourse , No Light In A Large Room etc. etc. ) but I think that´s only the tip of the iceberg, and we have absolutely no idead how many songs were recorded after 1996.

Also, there must be tons of rehearsal and live footage recordings in there that might be more interesting than outtakes , and unreleased films such as The Second Coming and 3121-The movie.

.

Is the author perhaps here on the org? Because he surely knows his subject matter. But then again, if that were the case, he´d probably a bit more optimistic and not narrow it down to a double disc´s worth of material.

Then again, Alan Leeds said something that was very much in the same vein....that there´s isn´t that much great material in there ,and that you could release it as bonus material with re-releases of already released albums at best.

.

So, what is your view on this?

If we've already heard everyhing worth hearing from the vault, how does the writer explain the gems that still get leaked? Who wouldn't want to hear hours of those funky rehearsal jams, see some unreleased music videos or concert footage, or even be able to buy CDs with high quality versions of the tracks we have already heard?
Personal opinions or speculation aside, there will always be people who will appreciate whatever the estate may offer from the vault, whatever it may be.

Yes.

He does have a point though. But I still disagree with him, for various reasons.

Many fans here would agree with him though.

Exactly my thoughts.

One could argue that the demand is probably no longer there and it would be a niche product for the ultra hardcore fans and that his casual fans would not buy, say, another Crystal Ball-like compilation but then again, his hardcore fan base is the demographic that still pays for CDs, so I think vault releases could still be a profitable thing, albeit in small numbers.

And like you said, there´s tons of stuff in the vault that we would want to hear or see.

In the olden days, about six months after Prince would release an album, we used to get what we called "outtakes". This was usually a bootleg cassette that contained alternate versions of released songs on that album, and maybe some other songs that didn't make the final album cut.

Pretty much every single time, nothing that was contained on an outtakes cassette was as good as what was on the released album. Sure, there were some unreleased gems but it always seemed to me that Prince generally picked out the best of what he had at that time for whatever album he was releasing.

HOWEVER......there is no doubt in my mind that there are dozens and maybe more dozens of good-to-absolutely-great songs in the Vault. After Prince changed his name and took control of his recording, outtakes almost dried up completely. But I'm sure Prince didn't stop recording songs that never got released, so it stands to reason there ARE a plentiful amount of great unreleased songs. Some of them we have heard, and I bet many of them we have not.

So I'm of the opinion that there are at least 5 albums' worth of release-worthy material. But I would not be surprised in the least if there isn't 15 albums' worth of stuff that should be released. Prince was that prolific.

What I want to see are live performances. If the Vault does indeed contain pretty much every concert he performed, I would definitely buy plenty of those. I can think of 10 right off the top of my head, and probably would buy 20 or 30 more after I started poking around.

I expect that just between outtakes and concerts that there are a minimum of 20 releases the hard-core Prince fan would buy, and probably 10 that the average music consumer would be interested in. That's a lot.

I don't doubt that there was a wealth of unreleased unheard material left in the vault at one point. The question is: how much of it is left and salvageable, assuming various reports are right and Prince destroyed some of the tapes after his JW conversion?

^^^^^ THIS

There may be duds in The Vault (and there was more than ONE vault!)...but there's no way it was all garbage. He wanted it all released. This is why he was so PO'd at WB. Remember his goal of having a whole shelf in the wrecka stow, all different albums?

This is just another cheap shot click-bait article.

Based on the bootlegs we've heared, I think
"The Vault" contains more, much, much more of the same, to the point where no one, not even KQoolmuxiq, or whatever his name is, would call all of it a "masterpiece". But I'm sure someone would be able to get some good albums out of it. But I'm sure 90% of what's in The Vault is "die hard fans only". Hell, that even goes for most of his albums, let alone the unreleased stuff. Let's just hope there's enough die hard Prince fans in the world left to make these Vault releases worthwile... C'mon, Tyka! Don't wait too long!

I am really looking forword to videos and soundboards of Live performances. Esp of some of the earlier concerts where the boot quality is not very good. I am sure there is enough unreleased somgs for every for every musical taste. Some will be good, some will not but I will probably listen to it all at least once. music

Regardless of what's in his vault, I still want to hear it. Regardless of what someone else supposes its quality going to be, I still want it released. I still want it all remastered and made available to us. My wallet is ready, I'm just waiting for the music. Once I hear it, I'll weed out the songs that don't interest me, but I will cherish it ALL.

Exactly. I'll figure out if I like it or not on my own time. History tells me, though, that I will like it.

such a boring album.

a few good standouts, but like the article stated, the last what 10 15 years of prince music theres has been a few good songs on each album...

phase 2 is as boring as planet earth. everyone was raving about phase 2 being amazing, black muse the best thing since adore... give me a break.

PH 2:
I don't know if I'd say that, but Revelation is an incredible song.
Baltimore, RNR Love Affair and others...they're all good but they grew on me. At first glance I didn't think anything much of the album.

Then again, I'm not usually looking for the immediate catchy songs of the 80s or 90s. I like to appreciate who Prince became. I do however listen to the old stuff sometimes. But I think he regretted some of those lyrics.

If someone's going to waste paragraphs based on something they know *nothing* about, they'd be better writting for The Onion who at least wrote something entertaining:

That was classic. My wife sent me that link when it was first published.

Regarding the article at hand, the author makes a good point or two, but he takes it too far. Like others have said, we keep getting gems from the vault along with the occasional dregs. But I lost respect for the author and had to put my phone down and walk away for a bit when I read this "‘All My Dreams’, the surreal synth opera that should have been the final track on Sign o’ the Times" Seriously?!? All My Dreams is a really good song, but it's not as a good as Adore, nope. Finishing an album with one of the greatest love songs of all time (if not the greatest) is pretty dang good way to end an album.

From what we've already heard there are tons of outtakes, tons of live shows and even a bunch of rehearsals I think are worthy. Considering there is likely to be way more than has already leaked, I'm pretty sure I would be happy with many, many releases in the years to come.

Then there is always the "Emancipation Factor". Who's going to decide which tracks are worthy and which are not? The many threads about single disc Emancipation prove that fans don't even agree as to what songs are worthy so I say release as much as possible and let us figure out our own "keeper" playlists. Just sayin... wink

It's easy.

Most songs can be in the vault because of how Prince saw those songs.

Other songs are gems that were not released due to other reasons.

If we assume 1000 songs in the Vault.

And we assume 80% of them to be lesser songs (or perhaps unfinished, etc).

Then we still have about 200 worthy songs off which we may already know 50 to 100 songs.

That leaves 1000 completely unknown songs.

If a party like WB manages to secure a deal with all of the inheriting relatives, and releases one CD per year, they could give us ten years of CD's filles with these 100 songs. (10 songs each)

.

If we also consider the remasters, the concert recordings, rehearsals, etc, etc there is too much music waiting to be released.

.

If you listen to the bits that mr Mono posted online you might understand what I mean.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
