Prince at the Grammys

I loved Prince's appearance at the Grammys in 2015 including the orange cream sickle outfit and legendary side-eye:

But one thing that's always bothered me is the media mis-reporting when he gave the side-eye. Most media stories say Prince gave that look after Beck was announced as album of the year winner (because the winner should have been Beyoncé). That's not true. The side-eye came when Prince first walked out on stage to a standing ovation, as if 'yeah I'm to cool for this joint and y'all know it'. And it was the perfect commentary on the previous 2.5+ hours of crap that came before it (2015 was not one of the better Grammy telecasts).

Prince actually had a big smile on his face when handing Beck the award. Who knows if he personally felt Beyoncé should have won, he obviously had respect for Beck as an artist.

You mean 2015, right?

My feeling about his sideways look was that it was simply a response to the approval he was getting from the audience...like, "This is too much and I'm uncomfortable with all the worshipping of me." And, "Yes, we all know what we've been through together."

Yep I meant 2015 (fixed op). You can take interpret the sideways look many different ways but it just annoys me that the media would blatantly mis-represent it. Did they not actually watch it and just reported on it afterwards? Maybe that's the look they would have used when Beck's name was announced but it's not the look Prince used.

I'm never sure why people think Prince & Beyonce were some power friendship. They performed together, and probably said hi a few times since in passing, but he's not Kanye West. He's not interjecting his thoughts about who should win this or that, or bogarting someone else's spotlight to announce Beyonce had the best record of the year. We know that Prince doesn't give a shit about awards, and his appearances on shows are just that - appearances. It's good publicity sometimes, and that's it.

Moreover, Beyonce doesn't deserve every single award given in a category she's landed in. I'm sure Beyonce wouldn't have minded losing to Prince either, had that ever happened (did it?). Beck's always been a quiet little genius, so the fact that someone recognized him enough last year to say "Hey, we dug your shit, man" was pretty cool.

As far as that snear on his face, if people watch the clip, he had just walked out there. People errupted into cheering, and a standing ovation. Prince showing up was always a surprise of late - no one knew he was gonna just blow in, blow up, and blow out. It's more plausible that he was just giving an "aww stop it guys" kind of acknowledgement to the crowd. It lasted a half second.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Was that the show where he was kick pushing his way to the stage in a wardrobe cart? lol lol cool

That would give another angle to his expression, LOL but otherwise I agree he was just being embarrassed at the crowd's reaction.

KICK - PUSH - KICK - PUSH. hahahaha Probably one of the funnier stories that came out. But I got the impression it was further in the past that 2015. She did say that no one knew Prince was performing at the Grammys, so it has to be 2004. That's one of the only two times he's performed at the Grammys, the other being 1985. Seeing that the girl in the video is younger than older, I'd vote for the 2004 appearance w/ Beyonce that her story references.

Ah, he did look a little annoyed in the beginning of that performance. LOL I always thought it was Beyonce doing that as she was all over the place. cool

Maybe he bumped into her on the way in? Now, that would make anyone lose concentration. lol lol

If I remember that correctly, he and Beck actually hugged. Or rather, Beck hugged him and he smiled, quite as though he enjoyed the contact. I don't think he hated Beck.

The media is a joke! They will say anything to get you to click on their story. Anything to cause trouble and anything to create hatred and controversy.

Prince and Beck respect each other and have for many years. I bet Prince was happy Beck won because Beck makes real music!!

The 2004 performance definitely was not a surprise. He and Beyonce rehearsed an jour a day, every day for a week. (She wanted to lipsynch....he was telling her to be brave and work on it.)

I still say it's 2015. Everyone's surprise was tangible. To her, a "performance" would be the same as an "appearance".

Plus, they got in that little tiff after he called her fat and she retalliated with "old man".

P looked almost like a teenager still in 2004.

I'm wondering if she meant The 2015 Golden Globes, which ARE billed as a surprise appearance.

Yes, I remember reading Beck talking about it later (after P died). He was somewhat embarrassed about hugging him, and went to check the photos. He saw Prince's wide grin and knew it was OK.

That's correct. And Beck told a sweet story about this. After the fact he had wondered if he shouldn't have done it (you can see he initiated the hug, not Prince) but then he saw a photograph and saw the big smile on Prince's face and then knew Prince was cool with it.

Oops...I see someone else just posted the same thing. lol

The media dogged his outfit that night too. They certainly tried at times to bring P down but the laugh is always on them. It was obvious by the crowd's reaction that P was still quite relevant and respected. I remember that night and my son and a few other peeps texting me as we fervently wondered back and forth if P was going to play that guitar LOL That man still had us all in the palm of his hands!

Ha ha.. Yeah, he's gotta be the only guy who takes an electric guitar along as an accessory.. But he was so sweet. When they went out and he waited humbly for everyone else to go first. So sweet.

A lot of people thought Beyoncé was robbed (I'm not a fan so don't care one way or the other) and Prince's side-eye became a meme for that. I have no problems with that. In fact I've used that photo quite a bit when I have a good application doe it. lol But there were completely dishonest media writers who should know better. Watch the video and you can clearly see the side-eye comes before Prince even starts speaking.

Meh, his body language in those instances is usually a mix of embarassment and irritation, like he kinda doesn't want to stand still for it. He always seemed slightly twitchy about all the worshipfulness.

I dogged the orange cream sickle! That was one outfit that I really hated on him. I don't think Prince thought Beyonce should have won, I don't think he really cared. He wanted to make the statement that he made-Records Still Matter along with Books and Black lives, Albums still matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
