What's the deal with Tidal and Prince now?

Whilst most of us are mourning the loss of a great musical genius, JayZ is telling people that Prince's catalogue is in good hands.

To add insult to injury (my opinion) Beyoncé is red-doing Darling Nikki for that thing called a Minaj. Changing all the words and making a mess. Again, my opinion.

Does anyone know if Prince really did leave his catalogue to Tidal?

I want f**k all to do with Tidal. I'm buying from other sources. As much as I love Prince, I'm not giving them a red penny.

What's the real deal. Someone please fill me in.

He did not leave his catalog to Tidal, they just have exclusive streaming rights, I suppose for a finite time. As for Beyoncé, it was just a tongue in cheek cover months ago, no need for a petty misplaced grudge..

Just put all your Prince records on your phone or cloud library, except Tidal has a few hard to track records if you weren't around to buy them when they came out.

It did appear there were more "Phases" to be released, guessing from the various icons of Prince in different eras. I hope they do get released. I had pretty much downloaded all their releases in flac. It felt good to be buying these recordings legitimately. Now it all seems so empty, like I could care less about what record company or deal he had. I suppose the most important factor is that music he left behind is done justice, released and done properly.

The only thing petty and misplaced is your comment bolded above.

-

We all have different musical tastes. Beyonce is not one of mine in any way shape or form. Just so I'm clear, its absolutely direct, not misplaced.

-

Attempting to demean someone by calling their likes or dislikes petty is, well petty.

-

The word grudge is inaccurate. I dislike. It is my opinion. And opinion is not a grudge. Plain and simple.

-

Moving on, after doing some research I've learnt that there is nothing that Tidal has that cannot be found elsewhere.

I think the only exclusives they have are If Eye Could Have Your Attention end the 3 Piano/Microphone tracks.

Everything else has at least been released elsewehere sometime.

I too have been buying the flacs for his albums. So far just D&P and Love Symbol, so I could make Tony M-less versions of those albums...lol.

Don't tell anyone because this has not been confirmed but I hear sometime in the 4th quarter of this year, Beyonce will release a surprise tribute album to "Purple Rain", which will be available exclusively on Tidal.

Its a streaming deal. Prince believed in what Jay Z was doing providing a streaming services that was provided by artist and fair to them. I like Tidal and have no problem with the service its good I like and I feel good that the artist is being paid properly for their work which is what Prince wanted.

I guess it depends on how long the Tidal contract was for, and if that contract is intact now that Prince is gone?

If the Estate wants Prince songs on iTunes, they'll be on iTunes.

If WB or any other record company buys the Vault, you can also bet that those tracks will be more accessible than just Tidal.

I don't know but that JayZ song really pissed me off. I don't think Prince would appreciate him basically saying he owns Prince now. I heard that song three times in one hour on our hip hop station here and it just infuriated me.

I cannot stand that JayZ dude, just something about him rubs me the wrong way. Solange slapped him around for a good reason, and Beyoncé didn't stop her. I cannot bring myself to signup and am just hoping someone releases remasters to all that stuff on CD so I can get it. My CDs are in bad shape.

It wasn't clear to me but is all his stuff including exclusive tracks available to download so I can burn it to CD ?
Surprise, surprise.

Ahh yes. There's still the legal stuff going on with the estate. It may be some time before thats sorted out. And the issue of The Vault. Just have to wait and see I guess.

Interesting. I don't understand the resistance to Tidal that some have expressed? My understanding was that Prince chose Tidal specifically because of the freedom and remuneration it gave to artists. At any rate, of the 7 albums I can't find anywhere, I do have two of them - The Gold Experience and The Rainbow Children. I'd like to acquire the other five, but it bugs me to buy it off of someone reselling it without any money going back to the estate, so I am holding off hoping that the estate releases those albums (perhaps foolishly).

Wow that list is so helpful.

-

My Crystal Ball original is cherished. The only thing I don't have is Batman and N.E.W.S. I could get both from the usual outlets. N.E.W.S is expensive. When buying from Amazon you get to download as well.

-

My cousin sent me Planet Earth from London because it came free with the paper. It's in a cardboard sleeve. I love that album.

-

Does anyone remember when with Blackberry you could upload the cd to your phone and save it? Good old days.

It was what set me off. That was why I had to ask the experts (you guys) what was really going on. I don't think Prince would have wanted to be owned by anyone. We have proof of that. smile

By the way, for those of you that want to download Lovesexy, best deal is probably found on Beatport: you can get the whole album there for € 1,30, probably because they consider it as 1 track. wink

Besides my personal issues with JayZ- I don't like that you can't see what's on before signing up. I know there is a free trial but I'd still like to know what's there before I give my info out.

Also I just don't want to stream- I want to download my music and have it in my space to access how I want. I can't stream music at work. I don't want to pay 10.00 to stream and then on top of that 10.00 per cd I want to keep. The lossless files are also RIDICULOUSLY expensive.

To each his/her own, of course. If you don't want to subscribe, that's totally your right. smile I will say though - Prince was VERY all in behind Tidal:

"HITNRUN sounds like today. Tidal is sinking money into it and they need it. And my heart is always on because I want them to do well. [Beyoncé and Jay Z] have taken a lot of abuse, their family has. A historic amount of abuse between the two of ‘em. And when we win on this, none of us’ll gloat. He’s not the gloating type anyway. He’s slick with his. He says to brush the dirt off your shoulder. “Y’all just need to stop. Just calm down! Everybody calm down! There ya go.”"

I actually think it's awesome. My interpretation is, the two eyes of his physical body are closed (death of the physical body) and his third eye is now open (afterlife).

Just my opinion but I don't think it should creep anyone out. We're all gonna die. I find the image reassuring in a way.
