Yeeesss, Shy kicks ass! I cannot sing for anything, trust. But when I play this song I cannot help but sing along with Prince and always imagine I am his back up signer on this jam. Every time, it's too funny. The Gold Experience album has some jems. I have read some on this site don't fully like this album, but I love the funkiness of it. Good stuff! And nursev you skipped over Shy back in the day? How dare you! (wink, wink). It's all good now you have re-discovered it. Glad to hear the appreciation of this track. Do me a favor sing out intro verses in the car next time you listen to it! "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

The pix threads are addicting. I love them and the comments are too much. I am losing beauty sleep these days!!
Do you also like the song Gold? It's hard for me to appreciate slower songs, but I LOVE this song. I do not know why but it makes me cry especially at the end and his guitar solo. I listened to The Gold Experience today in my car and I balled like a baby. It's so strange how certain songs can do that to ya. And it's not even a sad song, just his vocals..sounds of his voice and the guitar and way the song ends the album, man.. Ok ok, enough sad stuff, on to the fun.... Oh man you gave me arm chills when you said that part about a good life. If I put Gold on right now I am going to lose it! Dang it Prince, why did you have to go so soon, the party is just beginning! "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

Gold may be one of the songs Prince fans need to avoid for awhile cuz when he sings that it hurts...it really does

I am glad you get me about Gold. I have always felt that way about Gold but yes now, after Prince's passing, it hurts to hear that song. Ok, I will walk away from it for now. It's just so good. I am a sucka too for a good, moving guitar solo especially by Prince. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

Had he been any other artist, the song (and album) would have been hailed as a work of genius.

Shy wsa one of my favorite tracks on Gold. It has such a cool sound. I always though that it would have been a huge hit if not for the lyrics. I imagine radio stations would get some flack for playing it, especially here in the South. I have always really liked TGE, one of the few 90s releases that comes near the greatness of his 80s output. It seems like most people oin the org like it, but the few who don't have been vocal about it. To each his or her own!

Both Gold and Shy are great songs. Why would anyone not like them?

You could try, but you couldn't find a song on TGE that I don't enjoy. Love the album, the largeness of it all, the shiny production. I even came to terms with We March after blaming it for replacing Days of Wild.
. The street noises on Shy remind me of Lady Can Driver. Another plus. . I can't think of a song Prince recorded that has a similar sound to Shy. So unique. That's saying a lot for a guy with such a vast catalog. [Edited 7/2/16 6:02am] Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. I've always liked this song even though I've never been 100% sure of the lyrics meaning. But, love the music and vocal delivery. Just, sometimes, I find myself wondering, "What the hell is this song about?" I understand bits and pieces of the song, but the entire narrative seems fragmented. So, if anyone can tell me what I'm missing to understand the entire narrative, please do so.

I could be wrong, but I always thought it was about a guy who wants to hook up with a young girl he just met. And then he finds out she's a newly recruited gang member who killed someone to get in. P's "anti-gang violence" song?

I don't like it. I removed it from my tracklist in iTunes, and resequenced the segues so the songs blended better. I've never missed it when listened to The Gold Experience. It's probably my favorite 90's album, hands down. "Shy" ain't makin' the cut. If you have a problem with me, text me. If you don't have my number, you don't know me well enough to have a problem with me.
