there seems to be alot of people here that know every minute detail about prince so i thought i'd put this to them.

.

i heard prince didn't like this song but put it out purely to break through to the white american market. is this true?

.

personally, i never liked the song myself. something about it doesn't gel with me. the weakest song on 1999 in my mind.

Never heard that he didn't like it

As per my sig...the 2nd half of the 12" dance mix when the bass kicks in - is some of his best early work

Because this post is so silly eye am also going 2 b silly, and use Princebonics 4 my response.

There is no reason Prince would put a song on a record if he didn't like it. He was purposely trying 2 break through 2 a more diverse audience. It was 1 of the last songs recorded for 1999. It was purposeful, and perfect. It's not like Prince didn't have other songs 2 put on the album, if he didn't like LRC enough 2 put it on there. By the way, the remix is fucking golden.

Prince's own words about the song (in the 3rd person, written 4 Alan Leeds as he was about 2 write the liner notes for The Hits/The B-Sides), "after another marathon all-night recording session PRN wrote this in the front seat of Lisa’s pink car (brand of car can be gotten from her) whom PRN drove when she was in LA. PRN always considered the song a dream because it was written between 3 or 4 catnaps and he was never fully awake."

By the way, the pink car was a Mercury Montclair. Lisa's wife Renata posted pics of it a few years ago, and said they were thinking of selling it. The plates on it r the original Minnesota plates Lisa had.

I agree. Honestly, I was never a big fan of the album version, but the dance mix is one of my favorites. Only then did the song really click for me.

It is one of my top favorites of his as well. It is one of his best songs, in my opinion and even if P didn't personally like it (even if that were true or not), it is one of his most popular songs. It still gets a lot of air play.

Heck, the song inspired Stevie Nicks so it can't be all that bad.

LRC isn't my favorite jam, but I don't like slow songs biggrin so that's my problem. biggrin

But it's still a great song. And has grown on me over the years.

But yeah agree with Trivial Pursuit, he would not have recorded it and put it on 1999 if he didn't believe in that song.

it is quite simply the most perfect pop song ever. do a search of mozfonky, little red corvette, if you want my analysis of the song. For the longest time, critics were saying it was his best song. That one song changed my life forever. I know the lyrics to the song are sexual, but to me, the song is a holy song, a divine song, it's that great.

It seems that Prince sort of backed away away from LRC after becoming a JW. He still performed it, but it was cleaned up. I barely recognized it when I heard him perform it live in 2011.

I adored LRC the first time I heard it back in 1983. It is what made me become a Prince fan. I doubt I would have become one had I originally heard the sterilized version.

I never heard much difference lyrically, he just didn't get to the really nasty parts, but he didn't do that when he was young either. His later versions are pretty good, the montreuax revamp is fantastic. Sadly, i am not aware of his ever playing the full version live. If he did, i don't know of it. He usually only played about half of the epic album version, the lesser half in my opinion. It actually just starts to cook after the radio edit.

Ok, yeah I will check this out right now. I have a case of Prince right now, so I cannot sleep. eek

This song is good I just wish I appreciated slower jams. I have always had that issue I gravitate to the rockier, funkier type jams. But I have to say Prince is the only artists' slow jams I will listen to, well uh because it's Prince, the master! biggrin

Oh also I know LRC lyrics are sexual, and a ton of Prince's songs are. But for some reason I don't think about that. Maybe cuz I have listened to his music since I was way to young to be doing so and back in the hay day of his friskiness (1982 and on...), but I too get the spiritual side of his songs even if he is morphing the two ideas. I feel ya!

I thought I made the reason very clear. He wanted a song that would crossover to the White American audience. It's a fact that after that song was released the percentage of white people that came to his shows spiked up.
.
Prince was a great musician but he was also a great businessman. Means to an end.

It's like when folks say they don't like Purple Rain (sometimes only because it's so popular).
