Very possibly. Lycra has been around forever as well as Velcro, but there wasn't a huge variety of fabrics with spandex/lycra as there are today (just try to find women's clothing without some spandex in it today, lmao) He could have just been going for style over function as he often did.

I'd say he kept stripping because he got hot on stage, but his band members moved around a lot and wore similar clothing and didn't strip down...?
