The cd player in my car ate my Prince cd....

Today I wanted to listen to the extended dance mix of 'Little Red Corvette' in my car. I inserted the cd in the slot of the cd player...no sound.
It was the 3" cd single which is very small of course. In stead of a warning from my car it decided not to play and even worse: it won't come out!
In case you were wondering: the cd has more value to me than my car. But since I don't want to wreck my car which brings me to work every day: does anyone have a clue how to get it out? Is there a way to retrieve it safely without scratches (my cd) and without disassemble it (my car)?
Any suggestions? grenade lockdance CD idea2 beatdeadhorse timeout fit wall loser loser loser loser wacky nutty hmmm err censored omfg shocked sad

Find a coaster in your junk drawer - by coaster, I mean an old CD that doesn't work. Or use a blank one if that's all you have. Insert the coaster about an inch into the slot (yes, on top of the stuck CD). Then turn the ignition on and hold the eject button and wiggle the CD around.

Any car stereo place (I'm assuming they have those in the Netherlands) will be able to remove it for you, and likely do it for free as they know you'll be back eventually to upgrade your system.

I feel your pain!
Glad you asked the question
My car did the same thing ...I am ready to tear up the dashboard of my lexus to get the CDs out.
We have tried inserting a new cd but that button won't open the cd flap either.

No no, it wasn't a bootleg. It's the 3" single that was issued in 1991 by WB wink

Thnx 4 all the suggestions and heartfelt messages lol

I found the solution and it worked: I disconnected the battery in order to reset the radio and after a few minutes, after reconnecting, it gave the cd back. Thankfully. All I need to do is reprogram the radiostations that were programmed as favorites, but I think I won't even bother to do that since I never listen to the radio in my car. Only cds.
The 3" single is back in my vault, only to be played indoors! headbang music headbang nutty dunce popcorn king

That's the great thing about CDroms. There's a special slot for those 3" CDs to fit in. Recently re-ripped all of mine. Glad to hear you got it out.

I never place my 3 inch discs in anything other than a player with a tray. They aren't compatible with car players with slots. YOu will need to take the player out of the dash for sure. Whether you have to open it to get the disc depends on how it fell inside. You may have to sacrifice the player if you want that rare disc that you will never see in production again.

disbelief Why would you put it in your car player?!?

Let me take this oportunity to recommend something to all who still use CDs. CDRs are cheap. Copying a CD to a CDR is easy. Make copies of your valuable CDs and use those copies in the car or elsewhere. If the disc is damaged or stolen, you still have your original and can make another copy anytime.

That said, there may be a tiny whole with a tiny button in it that when pressed with a paperclip will release the disc. And there may not. Even if there is, being a 3" disc it might be dislodged or stuck. If you read the manual for your car CD player it probably says not to play anything but 5" CDs.

Sorry if I'm preaching, hopefully your story will help others to not make the same mistakes you did.

Yes this is what I do - just copy them onto CDr - it makes for less drama long term. Then just store the originals..........(I also keep a copy of the discs on my Portable Back up Hardrives too). I am super paranoid with my collection and baby everything.......

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Some do. Don't buy one that doesn't. If you have one already that doesn't, you can get a portable CDdrive cheap (waaay cheaper than some Prince CDs), plug it in your USB port and go. Not difficult or expensive at all.

Yes, I placed it without adapter. Simply because the cd HAS no adapter. I have two (2, deux, zwei, due, twee) 3" cds, the redt only regular 5". Both without adapter and never before played in my car until two days ago. I finally got it out, so.... razz

This was the case, but new computers (primarily laptops) are mostly released without them now.

They can easily pop out of the adapter. Folks shouldn't trust the adapter. (This coming from someone that owns every Prince 3" CD, along with Morris Day "Fishnet" and Kid Creole's "Sex Of It" on 3" CD)

I wish that format had been kept alive. I remember buying the European 3" of "Alphabet Street" at Silver Platters here in Seattle in 1988, and wondering why it was the only single of his available on 3" CD. Thankfully, Uptown Magazine later revealed all of the other releases that were available on 3" CD.

Off topic: My Maxwell "Embrya" broke my Pioneer CD player in the the late 90s because I tried to play track 0. Kind of like the Y2K bug. Pioneer paid to have it fixed, but it was annoying carrying that huge thing on the bus. lol

I got a new laptop a year ago, and yes, I had to be picky because MOST don't come with the DVDR drive but some do. The one I bought wasn't even expensive.
Just last week my dad bought an external drive for $25 for his laptop. It's not hard or expensive. Bet you can't replace that CD for $25. Just sayin...
