I may be wrong, but I believe this was a one-off guest appearance for Patrice Rushen, who Prince wrote "I Feel For You" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" for. (link)

Also, Margie Cox sang backing vox -- aka Ta Mara & The Seen. Possibly our introduction to Michael Bland.

I think prince loved this look himself , when you look good, you feel good And I think it came across in this performance and can someone tell me why he has to be singing about going to the electric chair for his thoughts yet he thinks its ok to make the women have thoughts ? Lol

Yeah he looked damn good and confident, I hear ya. He had that strut going on. And his eyes are so powerful. I played Electric Chair 3 times after I posted last. LOVE IT!

I remember when this show came on in the late Summer 1989 and was jumping thinking that Electric Chair was going to be the next single from Batman.

One of his top TV performances in my opinion.

I'm not sure if I ever knew that was Margie Cox. I knew it wasn't Elisa F.

And I bet you're right about Michael B. It was September 24, 1989, so it makes sense that it could be the first time we saw him. It was Prince's first TV performance like that in six years. There were no one-off club gigs, and the Lovesexy Tour ended in February 1989, then he went to work on Batman. So with no touring in the rest of 1989 (Nude Tour started in 1990), and no club gigs or Paisley Park gigs, it does make SNL the first time we saw the post-Lovesexy band. In effect, it was a bit like seeing The Revolution in backwards letters on 1999 - this was an early take on the future NPG.

To the O.P., I just watched this again the other day. It really is an electric performance. I love the choreography. He seems quite happy in general. Of course, he did have a #1 hit under his g-string, so he was riding high probably.

Yup it's pretty bad ass. And he did not even have to jump around and do splits and all of that. I liked when he performed those moves, but in this SNL performance, it's the music that is so funky with the guitar, man! And his attitude he was feeling good looking good.

One of my favorite performances of his, he was electric! ...It would have been incredible if Electric Chair was in the Nude tour setlist.

There's a major error in the PrinceVault write-up, which says the appearance was on the 10th Anniversary show of SNL (1989).

SNL came on in 1974; this would have been SNL's 15th Anniversary.

Yyyeeesss, he could rock that long hair like nobody's business. I am glad to hear others feel the same way about this song it's not a popular one. He works it out with his performance, as always. We all have excellent taste!

I melt evertime I watch Lovesexy tour when he is playing the piano and the wind is blowing his long hair.

So glad to see this tribute in HD (mainly 4 “Party Up” & “Electric Chair”). What’s really appreciated is that each appearance is in full version (from introduction). Tribute from Jimmy Fallon is really moving. Captured in my vault. Since our Prince passed away, many old stuff were broadcasted as the way SNL did, we had Nulle Part Ailleurs from French TV Canal + & Today Show (slightly cut though).
