"Purple Rain" / "Faithfully" chord progression in final Atlanta show I was listening to the final Atlanta show earlier today, and noticed something that had escaped me on previous listenings.
There have been discussions here and elsewhere on the relationship between Journey's "Faithfully" and "Purple Rain", but I've never noticed anything so literal until this morning.
You can hear a distinct chord progression that seems like a more pronounced recasting of "Faithfully" in his performance of "Purple Rain" at the final Atlanta show.
The part I'm referencing starts around 1:24:37, and repeats again around 1:27:10.

I just signed up finally for this site. Is there a way to fast forward on it? Of course I want the whole show but can't listen to it all right now. Found it. Thanks [Edited 7/7/16 14:15pm]

You just click on that part of the waveform at the top of the window.

It's not noticeable with the guitar intro (which I prefer) but is with piano. Of course Prince knew it and even reached out to one of Journey's band members about it but they loved the song and told Prince to release it. How thoughtful of him though to reach out, a lot of artists wouldn't. Paisley Park is in your heart

Have you seen Purple Rain Faithfully? It's a 5-minute video someone created that weaves a live performance of each together, Prince's being the 1985 AMAs performance of PR. Pretty cool to hear them side by side. Louder than God's revolver and twice as shiny

If Journey had felt in any way that it was similar, I surmise that Prince would've submitted another song for the "Purple Rain" movie. No way would he have released it.
