On his Chicago tour stop Prince brought out Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson for an appropriately churchical duet (if you think I’m exaggerating, check 1:57, at which point Mr. Rogers Nelson actually utters the phrase “Take ’em to church”–
Such adorableness!
She mentioned that backstage at the BET awards.

Kind of, but every time I watch the movie/DVD I get sucked in and think it's f**ing fantastic. . But I imagine that he was sick and tired of playing it. It must have been like being forced to relive you early adulthood over and over and over again. |

It may not be to everybody's liking, but Prince loved that style of singing. He was having himself a ball on that video.

I've had enough. The song is a mid-level Prince song. My God, it is the sixth best song on the PURPLE RAIN album...and that album only has nine songs!
.
"I Would Die 4 U"
"Let's Go Crazy"
"Take Me With U"
"When Doves Cry"
"Computer Blue"
"Purple Rain"
"The Beautiful Ones"
"Darling Nikki"
"Baby, I'm A Star"
.
Look at that! The song Prince is most famous for is actually the sixth worst song on the album it is from!. And if we want to count all of the released Prince songs, I can name 427 songs that are better than "Purple Rain."
.
Man, unfortunately "Purple Rain" is the song that will forever be most associated with Prince. "Purple Rain" is like the Britney Spears song "Hit Me Baby One More Time." She can't escape that one, and Prince even in death can't get away from "Purple Rain."
Ohh my order is a bit different....
Let's Go Crazy
The Beautiful Ones
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
I Would Die 4 U
Baby I'm a Star
Darling Nikki
Computer Blue
Take Me With U..this is last bcuz its just not good, Prince is awesome but Apples sounds badd!
Vanity could have done better i think ''The beautiful ones they hurt you every tiiiiime....''

Guess it's like a button one pushes to get some easy traction.
Purple Rain, like Respect, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Let It Be, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, What's Going On, Dance To the Music, etc. is such a classic that yes, you get tired of hearing it sometimes, but once in a while after a brewski or two, you fall head over heels in love with it again and just go like "What a great song! Wonderful song! I can't believe I've grown so jaded! Super song! Yeah, I've heard it too often but it's an INCREDIBLE song! A life reaffirming one! Essential! A must hear! One of the greatest EVAH! Wow!"

Nope. But then I don't listen to the radio so only hear it when it comes into my playlist shuffle. And even then, when it does, rarely do I change the song, unless REALLY into something like Peach or Delirious or what have you, but I will never grow tired of Purple Rain. Dance where y'are, just groove y'all.

It's a beautiful song. I love it. Not so much others performing it tho. And how is it ranked the 6th best song on the album? That's just a personal opinion and has no bearing on the real value of the song. At all. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN |

most people oversing it, it's not that kind of song in my opinion. Prince was a master at using his own voice and he knew when to go over the top and when to underplay things. These vain kids these days, growing up on nonsense like American Idol don't really have any artistic sense. Biggest problem is, there is no authenticity left. that's the biggest problem. |

Thank you. I have tried to tell people that three times already. He personally said that to her.
So? Who cares what he said to her? And why would you telling people that change anything? Just because Prince liked a certain style doesn't mean we all should.
It's really just personal taste.
Hey, I thought that Stina Nordenstam cover that suomynona posted was terrible as well. Again, personal taste.

I could very well ask who cares what you or anybody else does or doesn't like, not to mention repeating it ad nauseum.
The only reason that people are giving an explanation is because other people keep repeating their disdain over, and over and over, and over, and over............... even though Jhud wasn't even the thread topic in the first place.
So the real question is why does there have to be excessive whining about this on multiple threads?

Well, I've never mentioned JHud on here, ever...until this very thread - in regards to a performance she did, singing the song that is being discussed.
I don't really give a fuck what has or hasn't been said previously. I'm having a convo with people who agree with me and the chiding from others over a personal preference is silly.
I guess the real question to me is, why do people care about other people's preferences? And why would anyone give a shit that people are talking about it, even excessively?
Like really, who cares? I see stupid shit on here all the time and if the first sentence is something that I've read a million times before, I, for the most part skip it and move on. It's ok. No big deal.
I doubt very much that JHud would give two fucks about people not liking her singing style. Whatevs.

I actually don't care.....I was initially responding to destiny because her post made me laugh. You are the one who quoted me for whatever reason.
My first reply was very much on topic but for some reason that's not the one you chose to reply to.....
To your point, mainstream outlets are only going to play Prince's best known WB material. You ain't gonna hear Empty Room, Beautiful Strange or Way Back Home or any other non-corporate songs any time soon....that's not the way the machine works.
Oddly enough my on topic reply was ignored but whatevs........

Yeah, refreshing to see that the majority of you Prince fans agree that the song is played and covered far too much. I do still get a rush out of the intro -- those four chords on guitar are still very moving. But then "I never meant to cause you any sorrow..." Instantly change my channel.
.
Oh, and this was absolutley HORRENDOUS! So ridiculous. Stunningly bad. My jaw dropped as Jennifer Hudson was doing her thing. Can't anyone tell her to just stop?

I simply quoted you that time because, altough I was not mentioned directly, I did state my opinion on her singing so your comment did apply to me as well....which is totally cool.
But as for your original response - what mainstream outlets play or gravitate towards has never bothered me personally.

Purple Rain has never been one of my favorite songs from him ... Not even close, but I did enjoy live versions of him doing it just because it's obviously his "signature song"
However, I'd be happy to NEVER hear it again. If you will, so will I |

Not really because my comment was never about anyone's preference. I never once commented that no one should express their preference. What I specifically said to destiny was that I thought the criticism was excessive, meaning posting the same comment multiple times on multiple threads.
Furthermore, since I actually replied to the specific person that I thought was being excessive there really wasn't any reason for anyone else to pile on. I replied directly to suomynona because that was the only person I happened to notice making multiple comments so if you or anybody else decided to jump on it then that's on you.
Therefore, why so pissy, missy? Why so glum, chum? Why you mad, Rad?
Finally, my initial resonse was to the OP because he specifically said......

alot of the time when he would play it, it wasn't even about the song. It was about getting to see him again, getting to reminisce about the time and all the memories. When He played Little Red Corvette here I cried not because of the performance but all the history of that song for me. it's the one song that made me want to be a musician. |

Man, that is so true. I rank "Baby, I'm A Star" as my least favorite on the album, but I admit it is one hell of a fantastic song. The last song ranked on that PURPLE RAIN album would be the best song on most other albums. |
