being a KY native myself, when Billy Ray came out with that song. I tortured my family with that song on constant repeat and took over the phone with constant radio requests to my local DJs for it to be played!...bet I was the reason DJs got caller ID in the early 90s! Heh. Yeah, i'm a little tired of it, mostly because I wish people would finf more o f his songs. On the other hand, it IS the one that comes to mind when you say Prince, so I'm not too annoyed.

I am very tired of it. Don't want to hear it again but on a DVD of Prince singing it and I may go to the bathroom then. I was tired of Purple Rain when Prince was tired of it. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed
Thank You Prince | |

Purple Rain is a great song though, and it was the last song he ever played. Who's to say it's the sixth worst song on the album anyway, that's just your opinion. I think this is all just a classic case of 'I'm a edgy hipster who hates popular stuff".

I'm with you as far as hearing another musician try to cover "Purple Rain" for the upteenth time. It's too obvious, and Prince was never that. If members of The Revolution end up doing a tribute at some point, I hope they do some songs from Parade, and although I seriously doubt it would ever happen, I'd be blown away if they played an unreleased song or two from the Dream Factory album.
There's a video on YouTube of Santana playing "Last December" in tribute to Prince. It's very touching that one of Prince's influences growing up would know his catalog that well. Those are the kind of tributes I'd like to see more of. Don't play what's there, play what's not there.

It was also the last song the guy ever sang. And from what everyone that was there said he sang his heart out. That makes it even more sad.

. its the song from the album, from the movie that catapulted this man into fame . Uhh, "Achy Breaky Heart," a bad haircut, and horrendous wardrobe are what catapulted Billy Ray Cyrus to fame. You think he still wants to be associated with that mess? . Ugh, you cut my quote off, I didn't say it made him solely famous, but to a certain audience they gonna love this song to death

People who lack a full appreciation and knowledge of the vast expanse of Prince's brilliance fall back to Purple Rain for every reference to him. It irritates me that this song, Kiss, and 1999 is all they really know so that is all we hear over and over - at every tribute, from every so called friend and peer. I am over it - that is why I didnt watch the BET thing and dont plan to. Save America - Stop Illegal Immigration. God bless America. PEACE

I never liked the song before he passed and now I still dont like it. I think is an alright song nothing special. He has so many other songs that I think are better.

No. That's song will forever be his legacy. I do remember back around 1987 when prince said that Purple was NOT his favorite color anymore, it was Yellow. I guess nobody paid him any attention.

I don't think that "Purple Rain" is the best song on the album either, but it is the obvious choice for others to sing when they are honoring Prince. First of all even if it wasn't his biggest hit, it is still probably the song most widely recognized as a Prince song. Also, It is G-Rated. Can you immagine someone singing "Little Red Corvette" which is to sexy, or "Let's Go Crazy" which is inappropriate in a time of mourning, or "When Doves Cry" which is a commentary on disfuntional family relationships. "Purple Rain" is a moving, uplifting gospel song. It is appropriate for the occasion. With that said, I have to agree that even though it is the most appropriate choice, no one else should ever even attempt to sing it. I wish I could unsee Madonna's performance of it. I wish others would stop singing it because Prince is the only one who could ever do it right. I'd say it's the "Freebird" or "Stariway to Heaven" and, yeah, I'm pretty tired of it myself. Or his Satisfaction or his Like a Rolling Stone or his Sexmachine or his Purple Haze...

I never liked the song and I've said why on a few occasions on here. a girl in my high school died when this was a hit and I sort of linked that morbid feeling with it. But it is the song most linked to Prince and the one guaranteed to work for him in any circumstance. When doves cry was the bigger hit but it doesn't quite have the same resonance with the average listener and it's a poor live song choice. He had tons of great songs though.

one thing I don't like is how these modern singers sing though, I hate the vibrato that these kids sing with and it is not suited for every song, they don't know how or when to turn it off though. Purple Rain is not a song for that. But then I'm getting old.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

In Holland, Purple Rain made the # 1 spot while When Doves Cry didn't. So what's the biggest hit depends on where you live.

I don't know, maybe I'll cover it. I still think it is a great song, a rock anthem mixed with black gospel and country. Also, the piano version he did in the movie and on certain live performances is poignant and beautiful, one of the more rivetting scenes in the movie actually.

Don't agree, I'll never tire of it because it's a song that I can soak in, if that makes sense.
And hearing him saying "I love singing this song!" in several live performances makes me love it even more.
I have had enough of others' attempts to sing it, however. [Edited 6/28/16 14:14pm] Show your heart to me.

Not tired of hearing it, personally. It's Prince's anthem and signature song just like Billy Joel have Piano Man. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

There was a 33 page thread on this just three weeks ago...
Guess it's like a button one pushes to get some easy traction.
Purple Rain, like Respect, I Can't Get No Satisfaction, Let It Be, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, What's Going On, Dance To the Music, etc. is such a classic that yes, you get tired of hearing it sometimes, but once in a while after a brewski or two, you fall head over heels in love with it again and just go like "What a great song! Wonderful song! I can't believe I've grown so jaded! Super song! Yeah, I've heard it too often but it's an INCREDIBLE song! A life reaffirming one! Essential! A must hear! One of the greatest EVAH! Wow!" [Edited 6/28/16 14:47pm]
