There's no song so scared that it couldn't be covered. If someone did, they'd have to just do it in their on spirit, their own way and not try to sound like Prince. Perhaps even a totally different arrangement. The mistake would be trying to sound like him.
"Scared?" Now I'm envisioning a frightened song being covered by a blanket and hugged.
But yes, there are no songs so sacred they can't be covered.
If songs are to survive and thrive, they not only have to be listened to, they have to be performed. And that means people have to cover them eventually, as Prince the performer recedes and gives way to Prince the composer.
One of my relatives was a singer who composed her own songs. She has been gone for over a decade. Her songs survive because people sing them, not so much because she recorded them or they somehow found their way onto a music streaming service. (Instant tears when I found her catalog there that way.)
That Joe Kelly cover was competent, but not frisson inducing.

Bilal did that cover better than anyone could have. The physical aspect was a bit much, as no guy can do the Prince thing and look cool doing it, but on the vocals and the feelings, he was on point.
Vocally I agree Bilal did the purple justice But The Kid owns the overall performance of The Beautiful Ones right down to the floor moves Adore is on another level Not sure I want to hear anyone else sing that besides Prince Some of his songs are unique to him Do Me Baby is another untouchable
It goes without saying that NO ONE can sing Adore like Prince, not even close. But that doesn't mean no one should sing them. And, you must not have heard Meli'sa Morgan's cover of Do Me Baby, which Prince must have approved, no? Here is the video. [youtube:X]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSSdeE7Zvu0/link[/youtube:X] [Edited 6/27/16 17:11pm] Wow How could I have forgotten M Morgan's soulful and powerful version of Do Me Baby? Of course I remember it and I loved it I stand corrected |

Adore will (and should) be covered. Who's to say to no one will ever be able to sing it right? Come on purple people - there are billions of individuals on this planet, and untold billions still to be born, history doesn't end with us and thank God for that!
I look forward to one day hearing someone cover it with gusto -- it won't be Princey but it will be his composition. |
