This is a huge disappointment!

My LP copy was stolen back in 2011. Had been wanting to replace it for about 18 months or so, and now the prices have skyrocketed since Prince's passing.

Really hope there's just a delay and Warner Bros. comes around with this.

I sorta feel this is temporary. The future holds a lot of possibilities. I don't think this is permanent.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

yeahthat Might be rights issues that need to be sorted out with the Bremer Trust, or whoever's in charge at this point. (Don't really care who it is anymore.) Can't really use horseshit like "it had cusswords and Taffy didn't like cursewords, so no on The Black Album. They'd have to pull almost everything pre-2000. They aren't going to do that. Or maybe they are. One thing we have all learned over the past few decades -- good luck on anything being predictable in Prince-land.

Do they want to continue to see The Black Album selling on ebay for hundreds of dollars -- getting none of that money -- or do they want to cash in?

Also -- I believe this release date was set prior to his passing, so he must have agreed to it's re-release. Hopefully it was a remaster. Perhaps that's why it was pulled. Rumors of Prince deleting masters with cursewords. That would have been so stupid of him, but whatever. Many of us have The Black Album already. Some of us -- many copies razz Still, I would have bought a remaster. One of my favorite records -- if not my favorite -- by him. 1999 at #1, tBA at #2.

Is it because a original copy of the Black album sold for a shocking $15,000. So not releasing it keeps it rare to a point, besides the 1994 versions out there.

http://www.vibe.com/2016/...for-15000/

Got Them Coins: Someone Purchased A Rare Prince Record For $15,000

Prince-Rare-Record-Black-Album
It’s pretty possible to get anything you want in the world. Some finds are pure luck like an original copy of the Declaration of Independence for $2 and others are done in a larger way, like the lucky S.O.B who bought a rare Prince album for $15,000.

Discogs, a popular hub for vinyl enthusiasts, made the announcement Friday (June 10) on their blog. The late David Bowie’s second album held the record for the highest purchase on the site for $6,826. On April 22, just two days after Prince’s passing, a fan scooped up a double 12″ copy of the shelved ’87 project, The Black Album.

Also known as The Funk Bible, the album featured songs like “Le Grind,” and “2 Nigs United 4 West Compton.” A week before it’s release, the singer decided to shelve it and 500,000 copies of the album were destroyed, Chart Attacker reports. The album wasn’t officially released until 1994 when the singer was under his contract with Warner Brothers.

Fans are able to listen to snippets on YouTube, but there’s nothing like the sweet sounds of vinyl.

Since it’s pretty much impossible to hear The Black Album on wax (unless ur a DJ who held on to your copy in the 80’s) you can get a Tidal subscription and jam out here.

I guess there’s no harm in pretending you paid a pretty penny to jam to The Purple One.

Nope. One has nothing to do with the other. Otherwise, they would've never put it out in 1994.

Yep, that's really annoying when prices go up like that. I saw One Nite Alone offered for a thousand euros.

But I hope that a little patience will help to purchase hard-to-gets for a cheaper price in a few months when things have died down a bit.

i hope this isnt temporary, because if it is reissued, it will lose its rarity and the mass audience will be able to hear it. only a limited number of people have tidal and will actually listen to it, and only hardcore prince fans will have physical copies or digital. this is an important album in prince's history to me, and one he intended to never release. an original went for $15,000!!! as soon as i saw there would be a reissue, i was so pissed becuase it would lose its rarity and meaning. personally, i think it should be the only prince album not to be re-released... in my opinion, but i hope others see why im saying this. no hate, appreciate?

But it was issued in 1994, for a limited time -- and it didn't the rarity/price of the 1987 originals -- at all.

Releasing a record changes nothing about the rarity and prices of the circulating 1987 copies.

It's not like the CD that sold for $15K will only be worth $10 the next day. (Same with the 1987 promo vinyl.) That's not how it works with collectors. Not of just Prince, but any artist.

Just because The Black Album would be released again in 2016 -- doesn't mean folks wouldn't spend crazy amounts to have the white, grey and peach marbled promo vinyl from 1994. And they'd have to pay the same prices -- if not more now because he's no longer with us -- for anything from 1987.

A) Can we edit the thread title so it's at least minimally descriptive?

B) This blows. I want The Black Album on vinyl.

Prince absolutely did not want this out. I will look for the quote but even if I had access to vinyl I knew this was not going to happen. I will bet $ 94 is the last release as Prince wanted to forget this.

Actually, the only true Black Album version is the vinyl from 1987.
98% of what is offered on sites like eBay is worthless copies, regardless of the price they ask. So I think that you're right that a reissue won't have any effect on the rarity of the original from 1987.
For the purists among us even the limited reissue of the 1994 cd is of no importance. They will only settle for the original 1987 vinyls and keep on paying ridiculous prices (and therefore screwing up the market for others, thank you very much). No 2016 reissue will change that.

Absolutely. I remember back in '94 just thumbing through the CD racks at the local store and seeing it there. No advertising about it. It wasn't even on a new release display. Just buried in the endless CD bins. Bizarre for such a fabled release. eek

It was advertised and promoted. Yes it wasn't a major release, it was one step closer to getting out of his contract for him at the time, so he wasn't going to promote it - but there was promotion done, even if it was scant.

.

As for why didn't everyone buy it in 1994, well we have fans here who weren't even born then, so...

The CD was easy to get in '94, but in the U.S., the vinyl was import only. I never saw it in a store.

I'm glad to hear there was some advertising. At Rock Records in downtown Chicago (which was a pretty big store back in the day, but now long gone) there was no promo for it at all. I used to stop in there every "new release Tuesday". I'd always thumb through the Prince section as well, and that was how I found it. I can even recall a period when they had the 1-800-NewFunk CDs on the new release wall displays. Don't ever recall seeing anything for TBA though.

The poster sounds cool. Would you be willing to post a pic of it?
