UTCM & Parade are really good

I listened to Parade before but more so as background music so I didn't pay attention and same as UTCM. So the other day I figured since VH1 is overplaying the heck outta Purple Rain, Ill watch the other movies and listen to their soundtracks ( prolly do another post on Graffti Bridge later) but OML, UTCM & Parade serverly* under rated. The movie is actually really funny and the story, tho basic is pretty good. I love Jerome in this. And the Soundtrack, I was reading once something that said if wasn't for Kiss, Parade would be complete mediocre. I highly disagree, besides Kiss of Course , CTP, Mountains, Anotherloverholeinyohead, and STISIA (manage to hold back tears) they're excellent. Give me your thoughts, how do you feel about UTCM, Parade, and the whole era?

I´ve never disliked it eversince I first watched it. I find it really enjoyable.

Probably because I never knew it was such a flop. In the pre-internet era, growing up in a small town, I never really read any other opinions on it, and watched it a bit later when it was already released on VHS.

I never disliked it either. I just had never had a desire to watch the movie

Parade gets lots of love here. 9 out of 10 orgers put it in their all time Prince albums top 3. Including me. It was the first album I listened to when I heared the sad news. As for the movie, it's funny if you're a Prince fan, but it lacks the universal appeal of Purple Rain or the showmanship of Sign O' the Times.

Has anybody else ever noticed that UTCM is almost identical to James Cameron's Titanic? Other than the sinking ship - but not by much - Christopher died shortly after riding a boat.

You can map so many scenes from one to the other. Think about it the next time you watch the one you're less familiar with. I think I've seen them both 50+ times neutral

Parade is Prince's masterpiece and UTCM is unbelievably underrated. Infant that whole era and sound of 85-86 was 5 star gold.

the movie has a lot of replay value to me cuz of the comedy, the lavishness of the scenes and the performance by P, Jerome and Kristin Scott Thomas

.

Jerome does really well in this movie. Prince has quite a few shots that linger on for a bit too long it seems, which makes for some weird funny haha! moments. Kristin is all charm, she has a lot of onscreen personality.

.

since Prince's acting is a bit iffy at times in UTCM - but entertainingly campy - the movie is greatly helped by the solid performances in the smaller roles : Emanuelle Sallet ('Katy') and Steven Berkoff (dad)

.

I've seen this movie many times. while I was on the fence about Prince's performance the first time around (the opening scene in particular seemed overacted on his part), the more I watch it, the more I love it. now I can see how Prince's interpretation greatly helps the movie along - it adds some quirkiness that sits well with what is essentially a romantic comedy with a dramatic ending

.

I love the fact it's in black and white and that it was filmed in France. the playfulness in some scenes is great too (the children and the elephant at the party for instance)

.

it's the first movie I watched after I heard the bad news

I don't think I've seen UTCM since the early nineties, but I did enjoy it and saw it many times from release until then. Parade is a definite favourite, a classic album.

"Parade" has been my favourite since I first heard it in 86. Never seen UTCM though, despite owning the DVD.

I'm now listening to Come. That first song just rocks my world. So sexy/funky/jazzy. I love that album.

I´ll never forget the reaction I got from one of my professors at university when I gave him a VHS copy because his girlfriend was a casual Prince fan and wanted to watch UTCM.

When he returned the VHS I asked him for his opinion and he looked at me very seriously and said something like :" Great music, nice movie, but...that guy is really a bit in love with himself, isn´t he? I mean, almost every scene is about how sexy he is and then those poses and stares. He is a bit full of himself, right? "

lol

And I just smiled. My prof is the polar opposite of the way Prince looked in that movie.

Agreed. I never disliked UTCM. The DVD is also great with all the music videos included as bonus features

Hmmm personally there is no argument that Parade is one of his best. It is from the golden period at a time when fans were on a roller coaster with no idea where Prince would take us next.

UTCM is not a good movie. It is a fun long form video and does have funny bits in it but IMHO it was not and still isn't a good movie. Strictly for Prince fans only.

I remember going to see it at the cinema with expectations of something more similar (though not the same a Purple Rain) and being so let down at the time.

With time I have enjoyed it more.
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I absolutely love both - UTCM is actually my favourite film of his. Yes it has some cringey moments, but it's so great to see Prince and Jerome having fun, and I love the music. Plus it's so glamorous!! The locations are stunning, the film got me interested in the south of France and I ended up having a holiday there some years ago. I saw the building they used for the restaurant scene, and stood on the steps where Tricky and Christopher wait for Mary to arrive. The clothes are amazing too - the women's costumes are a slideshow of high end 80's fashion!

Parade contains two of my favourite songs - UTCM and SISIA, the latter now a really difficult song to listen to, for obvious reasons.

When I feel a bit better I'm going to watch UTCM - it always makes me smile.

As much as we all love Prince, your prof was right. I once read an article that started:"Prince, the greatest Prince fan in the world..."

Parade is one of my favorite albums and eras so of course I agree with you. Under The Cherry Moon used to get mocked a lot by people on this board but I really enjoy it. It's a funny, quirky little movie that I kind of enjoy more than Purple Rain because Purple Rain is just so melodramatic, which it's supposed to be. Also JEROME AND PRINCE. I love them together, much more than Jerome and Morris. They just really had great chemistry, in the film and onstage. I want to go watch the movie now.

Parade is one of my four favorite Prince albums. His work between 1985-1988 was the most brilliant and Parade was released in 1986.

Parade is probably in my top 5 albums. I love the story behind the recording process for the first four tracks. The "Kiss" story. I love the chord structure to "Anotherloverholenyohead", and I love playing "Sometimes It Snows In April" on the piano. I love the black and white collages on the sleeve. I loved the shorter hair he and the band had (mostly), and his suits he wore.

.

UTCM is funny, it's as bad as it is good, and funny as it is sad.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I love "Parade"..One of my top 3 faves by P. "U.T.C.M" was fun, camp flick. When I saw it in the theatre the audience seemed to enjoy it. The women wouldn't stop screaming and taunting at P during certain scenes...I found the home VHS the other day and it's still sealed. smile

The reason diehards like us love this record so much is that it is unlike any other full length record he released.
