Your Exodus Reflections

I remember this record store opened in a strip mall in the philly Suburbs near us and I was shocked to see the place packed with bootlegs. This had to be the late 90s. I got to talking with the guy working there about Prince and he metnioned Exodus. When I told him I never heard of it he said, "It's big and funky and it sounds like Prince is playing as if his life depended on it!"

I finally found it online and ordered it and I remember the day it came, running home and just being blown away by it. I love the vibe, the performances, the production. It's one a go back to again and again.

Any Exodus fans out there?

Love "Exodus". I always thought of it as being a distant cousin to the "Black Album". You weren't supposed to have this profane funk rock record, but you wanted it anyway. I love the production too... My bootleg buddy hooked me up back then with "Exodus" and "The Undertaker" at the same time..They were both on replay nonstop for a while. Then "T.G.E" finally comes out and it's more icing on the cake. I love the 94 "Exodus/Gold" era of P and the NPG.

Love this.happy times. 20 years later after prince hooked me to George Clinton I really get a whole parliament funkadelic vibe from the band. I would have love to see more of this vibe get released. Long live new power.

One of his best bands. I like the 94-95 incarnation of the NPG.

The album has a bit too many skits for my taste, which makes it sound a bit dated but I like the skit where he´s in a restaurant.

I like all songs but Hallucination Rain and Cherry Cherry are not my thing. Maybe I should go back to that album and give it another listen.

The Good Life and Count the Days are my favorite songs on it.

And I liked some of the Get Wild versions.

Not a fan of Sonny's voice. And when the other songs come up randomly, I end up skipping them. Either right away, or after about a minute.

Another record that Prince never played after 1995 in concert. I take that back. He might have played Count The Days at the Celebration shows in 2001.

"Get Wild" was great live. Check out the version on Glam Slam West for the best version -- where he chides the Los Angeles crowd for not being like a Mpls crowd. Epically funny, fantastic guitar solos.

Other than that, not a fan. A friend asked me to rip Exodus for her the other day. I didn't even have it ripped on my computer. (And have deleted it since.)

"Mashed Potato Girl" is great. The side that doesn't have Sonny talking to himself -- but the part where Prince is talking about this girl that doesn't eat.

Best (half of the) track on the whole CD.

I love it: as with The Time and Gold Nigga it was really Prince taking advantage of a moniker to play it black and play the R&B card fully.

The segues, while annoying when u play the album in shuffle, work well in sequence IMHO. IDK, sometimes I'm bored with them but on the other hand they're funny and they contribute to the mystique of the whole thing.

What is also amazing is the outtakes: they are fabulous! As with most Prince albums there was enough material for a vibrant double album!

Man, yes. I was so much into Prince back then - as a fairly newish fan at the time. He could do no wrong. I loved that whole damn album. Apart from Sonny can't pronunciate 'hallucination' correctly lol

.

I think Prince performed with the NPG on a Get Wild clip over here in the UK at some point. Red veil and all.

Love the album but skip the segues. Most songs are good but Get Wild, Count The Days and Exodus are great songs, really great.

Always saw this as a companion piece to TGE and Mayte's album.

I think he should have put those outtakes on the album instead of all those skits.

I am a huge fan! I the the song The Exodus Has Begun is the biggest, barest, phat test, thickest, and sickest song that goup of people put together. It was never outdone in terms of that kind of sound. Just my opinion but I feel PFunk was an attempt to revisit it in some aspects...and as much as I LOOOOOVE PFunk, it fell short. There aren't who gh words to express how badass The Exodus Has Begun is.

I remember paying stupid amounts of money for it when it came out. There was just one copy in the record stores in the town I used to live in. Loved it, still love it and could only love it more with Prince having done the lead vocals on all the songs.

I wasn't sure if it was Prince on the lead vocals on the first couple of listens though. wink

As usual Im in the minority because I love the segues. They are clever, funny and the segues are what make the album distinctive IMO.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Same for me, I love Exodus. Especially The Exodus Has Begun, I love jogging to that and shouting 'yes motherfucker yes!'
My favourite era. Some of the segues are hilarious but I tend to skip them most the time. And as databank says some great out-takes as well.

Love the album, the the seques are overdone, take away everything but Mashed Potato Girl, and you have it would flow much better imo.

Man, I remember telling pretty much everyone I knew (who cared the slightest bit about music) about 'Exodus' when it was brand new.

I thought the seques were the FUNNIEST things I'd ever heard. I still like them a lot and agree with those who've said they give the album its distinctive flavor.

I kind of thought it was 'innovative' to have stuff like that on a record, until a buddy of mine who was a huge hip hop fan let me know how commonplace those kinds of sketches already were... oh well. still laugh-out-loud funny.

My only caveat about 'Exodus' is... a pretty big one. I SO wish Prince had sung all the songs or just had a more prominent vocal presence overall. Sonny T just doesn't have a strong enough voice to carry the album.

Killer songs though. 'Count the Days' is my fave.
