I always thought it was Mayte.

Fantastic song though.
Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

Definitely Mayte. [Not to be confused with the Oasis album]

.

It's quite the trilogy on Rave Un2 with Tangerine and Man O'War. It may make up the minority of the album, but it's still a helluva break-up record. Heartbreaking really, so soon after Emancipation Disc 2.

Man O War is serious too...always loved it, but yeah the same person inspired Disc 2 and this song...really two extremes...very sad.

If I had a buck for every time I mention this on here... but this song is definitely re-moulded from Prince's A Case of You cover from the 3-August-83 concert. It's just re-arranged with new lyrics.

i never saw the similarity to case of you or whatever. Love you but don't trust you is probably in my top ten Prince songs, and definitely in my top ten ballads. Prince was rarely this open and yes, man0war was great too. He said it himself "people totally write off my slow jams".

2015, for me was a bad year.
2016, is just a sad year.

Great song, up there with 'Adore' for me.

He played this song at his very last concert in Atlanta and after the phrase "good old days" said "the 80's?" so he was directing the song to his favorite protege in the 80s, not Mayte. I think it was Vanity. She cheated on him after he cheated on her. And she got married without telling him.

I also think Dark, Indifference,Little Red Corvette/Dirty Mind were Vanity related as well and The Beautiful Ones and Purple Rain.

What is "Indifference"?

.

LRC isn't about Vanity - but the story of how that was written is pretty cool. Lisa Coleman still owns that pink car.

.

Purple Rain is divided into three parts, actually.

.

The first verse, "I never meant to cause you any sorrow", was about his father.

The second verse, "I never wanted to be your weekend lover", was about Apollonia.

The third verse, "Honey I know times are changing", is about his band.

.

One time he explained the meaning of the term 'purple rain', "When there's blood in the sky, red and blue equals purple. Purple rain pertains to the end of the world, and being with the one you love, and letting your faith and God guide you through the purple rain". If you think about it, he even sings about a purple sky in "1999".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Indifference too? ouch. I was thinking that was for Mayte. Although I also thought it might be Vanity.

I always assumed it was about Mayte also. The other day I was listening to "I Can't Love U Anymore" and wondered if it was an earlier incarnation of "Eye Love U, But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore." Does anyone have any insight?

he'd been way past vanity by the time the song was released. if it was about her, it was a rerecorded version. Everyone at the time just assumed it was for mayte being as they were just then beginning to part. and then man 0 war seemed to be on the same topic. Prince says that Little red corvette was inspired by vanity after her death but that song doesn't seem like it was about someone he had a relationship with but rather a one night stand. he said it so we have to go with it but I never thought so. Beautiful ones and purple rain definitely could have been for vanity.

This is weird. I googled the same thing this morning and this came up:

http://prince.org/msg/7/279230 which pretty much says Mayte.

well, since Prince himself is the one who said it referred to the 80s, I think I'm gonna go with that.
