So where do you all think his clothing and accessories should end up? I thought the Costume Institute at the Met in New York. He was a national treasure after all, and the clothing and accessories would be preserved properly. I am sure if Paisley Park is opened as a museum, some clothing will remain there, but ...

Stacia Lang was Prince's costume designer, on 25 April this year, she wrote on her Facebook page, about a memorable episode in her career:

"Prince's secretary came to me shortly before the MTV Music Awards and said something to the effect of, "You're not going to believe this.... You'd better sit down. " And she proceeded to tell me that Prince wanted a costume with the BUTT OUT. Ummmmm, OKayyyyy. What? How on earth would we do this? What fabric? How much "exposure"? Would his butt skin really be bare? Does he have a hairy butt? Or WHAT? Since there was no time to waste, he had said that he wanted to see sketches ASAP in his office. I set in to sketch. I finished within a couple of hours. I headed to his office, white knuckling it down the hall. It was just him and me.... Looking at the sketch... So quietly....I cleared my throat and said, "Prince, I've done two versions for you, one with more exposure, and one with less." The surreality of that moment cannot be over-stated here. Without a word, he took a pencil and put an X thru the version with "more exposure". After all, a man must have some semblance of modesty, right?"

I've been telling people for years that his butt was not actually out in that costume. Look at the difference between the lace in his sleeve and the lace at the edge of the cut-out in back. You can see that the lace in back is stitched to something completely stable and opaque - probably a lightweight foam of some sort - and the pants are lined. The lace in the sleeve is unlined – you can see his arm through it.

The defense rests.

BUTTONS!

Notice how much of his clothing had (usually white) buttons in a row. Upward along the legs of his pants or in a slash along the side-front.

One article I recently read said that the buttons would elongate his frame and make him appear taller. Anything to create an upward angle.

When he was thinner, his proportions were also those of a much-taller person (as long as he wasn't standing by someone else)!

The clothing will have to be preserved first. The PR coat that was on display in Minneapolis had already started to fade, so they're having to do restoration work on it before it can be displayed further.

BUT...if PP becomes a museum/visitor's center, there's enough clothing to help mount the many exhibits that will be needed to bring people back again and again. The costume room is still there (right?) and would be perfect for display.

I read an interview in Rolling Stone with - now, I forget the musician's name - he said Prince felt so comfortable with that fellow's band (which was recording at PP) that he would walk around in his pajamas and slippers to go make popcorn in the kitchen. Such a cute image!

In a compelling oral history of Prince's career in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the singer's wardrobe director for a 1989 tour, Helen Hiatt said: 'He was an artist right down to the clothes he wore. The Lovesexy Tour, I think, was the best I was involved in. We started writing on all his clothes, and the clothes all had graphics on them.

'On opening night in Paris, he came to me and said, “Can you write `Minneapolis’ on the sleeve?” And I was like, “Sure, it’s only an hour before show time.” He was thinking of every last detail up to the last minute.'

Helen also revealed the story behind an infamous bum-flashing suit that he wore at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.

'Let me get this straight,' said Oprah. 'There's just a department that just makes your clothes?'

She told the paper: The [butt] suit was right after I quit working with him, but I knew that was totally his idea. There was actually a layer of skin-toned fabric so the pants wouldn’t hang funny. It was a nice fit. That outfit made an impact. Many people [in fashion] still remember that. For all of us who worked with him, he remains a fabulous calling card.'

Exactly. If there hadn't been a full back on those pants, when he did that hip swivel with his ass to the camera (I'm sure someone can find the gif of it), the unstabilized lace would have dropped and you'd have seen everything all the way forward to and including his balls.

I think a lot of the fabrics themselves were pretty ordinary. I mean - he wore a lot of pants that appeared to be made out of plain old stretch jersey. The stuff that was unusual and custom (as you note) was the printed fabrics - especially the long turtleneck tunics with the 20TEN imagery. I'm sure these were printed specifically for him.

As digital printing has taken off, I think there are more and more places where you can get fabrics custom printed. But you have to be able to create a design that will translate to fabric - that's the hard part.

One thing that brings me comfort is that, in heaven, Prince's blacks will finally match.

I had to laugh when I read that. I know you had a problem with that. I did, too, but not as much.

gocrazy99, I really liked that fact that Prince was not afraid to wear certain fabrics such as lace, brocade, and crushed velvet. Many of his outfits were in more than one color. One of my favorite suit jackets was the one with the lapel that criss-crossed in front. I also liked the double-lengthed hem suit jacket.

This is a great topic, and a very important discussion in connection 2 Prince.
His clothing and style was very much important to him in connection 2 the music.

He designed a lot of the 'fashion'

I was thinking the same the other day when I first looked at the photo of that heart-shaped hand-written note destined to his designer (that same lady mentioned above) and from that note we can see that he was getting closely involved in the designing process. This also shows that his creativity covered many areas and not just music.

How about the Graffiti Bridge outfit? The one with the leggings. I thought that was cool, of course he's the only man that could pull that off. The black n white poncho outfit was wild.

In keeping with the theme of not matching blacks, last time I saw Prince in person, he was wearing non-matching blacks!

I take that as proof that he was here. He probably knew of my aversion to mismatched blacks and did it just to tick me off. hmph!

I immediately thought of you. It was his LOL tour. I was like 6 feet away from him all night.

Hi All

I quickly skimmed this so sorry if it's come up already. This was an article that came up in the How depressed was he about Vanity? thread. It's from Jamie Shoop's best friend Cynthia Vargas Sieloff who designed outfits for Prince in early 80's including Purple Rain photo shoot (the one's shown above). She spoke recently to the press after he died.

Sheila E's 1 legged 1987-88 outfit

I know Prince designed a lot of the band(s) outfits and such

Do we have any info on Sheila E's outfit?

I was a huge DC Comics fan back then and in early 1986 there was a superhero called Looker.

Prince's looks were best in the 80s, from both a design and quality standpoint. More recently, I thought his 3rdeyegirl looks (from the tour) were well done.

I agree that his looks from the 80s were by and large really good. I love his Parade-era look. I'm not a particularly big fan of his look in the mid-90s, Emancipation era. His hairstyle then was not the most flattering. I'm not a fan at all of the outfit and hairstyle he had that's on the cover of Rave. I think that his style from 2004 (Musicology) onward was polished and classy, for the most part. I loved his outfits that he wore when he performed at the Super Bowl! I think he looked really nice in the suits and the tunic and pants combinations.
